Kids fill Wilkes-Barre library for End-of-Summer Reading Carnival

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Kids and families filled the Osterhout Free Library in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday for an End-of-Summer Reading Carnival.

The children's department was transformed into a fun department with carnival games, prizes, and, of course, reading.

Non-profit helps ready kids for coming school year

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A children's non-profit is making sure hundreds of students in the Poconos will start the school year off right. The non-profit Angels and Dragonflies held a Back-To-School Giveaway on Saturday in East Stroudsburg.

Volunteers handed out backpacks filled with school supplies, including folders, notebooks, pencils, and crayons.

Organizers say the idea behind this is to help children in need start the semester on equal footing with other students.

WAYNE TOWNSHIP, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police are investigating who is behind a case of deadly animal abuse in Schuylkill County.

Troopers say they were called on Thursday to the area behind a business along Route 183 near Schuylkill Haven for a report of a person dumping trash into a dumpster.

Upon arriving on scene and looking through the trash, state police say they discovered several dead dogs in the trash bags.

ASHLAND, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Officials say two people were displaced after a second-alarm fire in Schuylkill County Saturday afternoon.

Authorities with the Schuylkill County Communications Center told 28/22 News firefighters were called to the 700 block of Walnut Street in Ashland just before 4:00 p.m. for a reported structure fire.

Dozens of community activists, union leaders, and lawmakers turned out on Saturday on Public Square for a rally called Protect Our Checks.

Several were armed with signs urging Washington to leave Social Security benefits alone.

There is currently no proposal to use social security funding for other programs, but the federal government can tap into surplus social security revenues for general government purposes.
