PennDOT announces South Abington Township road to close

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Shady Lane Road in South Abington Township will be closed starting Wednesday.

Work on a box culvert replacement project is set to begin late Wednesday afternoon, meaning anybody who uses the road will have to take an alternate route.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation expects to have the road closed until approximately March 5, but they say the work is weather-dependent, so things can change.

POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Governor Josh Shapiro announced in Pottsville on Tuesday a new initiative aimed at addressing the childcare workforce shortage in Pennsylvania.

Part of Governor Shapiro's 2025 to 2026 budget proposal takes a significant step toward strengthening recruitment and retention in Pennsylvania's childcare system.

"I have proposed investing $55,000,000 in making sure that we can recruit and retain more workers to places like this and keep them here doing this work that they love," Govorner Shapiro explained.

Economists project active housing market for Poconos

(WBRE/WYOU) — Economists are projecting an active housing market this year, which could mean areas like the Poconos will continue to see an uptick in people moving to the area.

According to the "National Association of Realtors, the 2024 market started on a positive note with inventory on the rise, but then rates began to climb, causing sales to slump.

However, this past summer pushed inventory to its highest level since 2020 as it came with a surge of new listings.

In the Poconos, the growth continues with lots of new home construction popping up across the region.

"It is beautiful. When I first walked in here I said 'Wow! This is amazing.' And I would hope that everybody would feel the same way. You know? It is a beautiful building," said Property Manager for the former Altamont Hotel Project Diane Lizzio.
