Pocono Chamber of Commerce pays it forward to Habitat for Humanity

MARSHALLS CREEK, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pocono Chamber of Commerce presented Monroe County Habitat for Humanity with a chunk of change on Wednesday.

Last fall, volunteers with Habitat for Humanity helped out at Pickle Me Poconos, a festival held in East Stroudsburg.

On Wednesday, the chamber paid it forward by presenting a check to Habitat for Humanity in the amount of $2,400, a percentage of the money raised at Pickle Me Poconos.

PHRC visits Monroe County in statewide tour

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) made a stop at the Pocono Family YMCA on Wednesday for their statewide tour, "PHRC on the road: Building a Beloved Community."

The goal is to address issues and concerns like disability discrimination, racial and gender equality, and much more.

At Wednesday's listening session, they presented a community framework and an overview of the services and programs offered.

They also opened it up for the community to ask questions.

Bucks County man found guilty, but mentally ill, of 3rd-degree murder

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Bucks County man has been found guilty, but mentally ill, of third-degree murder in Luzerne County.

Joseph Sarmiento was charged back in June of 2021 after police said they found 38-year-old Helena Johnson dead in a Hazle Township motel room.

Sheriff’s Department in Wilkes-Barre introduces Crisis Intervention Team

Police say Johnson was hit, strangled, and found in the bathtub.

Investigators found the only person to enter and exit that room was Sarmiento.

PSP, police investigating fatal Luzerne County fire

WEST WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man died earlier Wednesday evening after a fire broke out in a home in NEPA, the fire that was too hot for people in the house to try to save his life.

The call went out on Wednesday evening. Officials say they were able to get the fire under control relatively quickly but weren't able to save the man who died.

The fire tore through the small apartment behind the garage of a home on the 500 block of West 8th Street in West Wyoming. Crews from multiple departments responded.

Scranton hospitals amping up security

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A recent rise in violence against healthcare employees has hospitals amping up security.

On top of the shooting that occurred at UPMC in York County, there have been a few violent acts in Scranton as well.

There were two violent attacks at Geisinger CMC in Scranton.

Police accuse Keith Tolley of being involved in one of those incidents.

Police say after being denied pain medication, Tolley acted up and stabbed a security guard.

Sheriff's Department in Wilkes-Barre introduces Crisis Intervention Team

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the lack of mental health crisis services across the U.S. has resulted in law enforcement officers serving as first responders to most crises.

One local sheriff's department is expanding efforts to help better serve those struggling.

The Luzerne County Sheriff's Department now has more than 10 deputies certified in what's called a "Crisis Intervention Team" (CIT) Program.

Fox involved in multiple attacks tests positive for rabies

(WBRE/WYOU) —  The Pennsylvania Game Commission confirmed the fox attacking residents earlier this month in Monroe County tested positive for rabies.

On February 19, the Stroud Area Regional Police Department was called to a report of a fox attack on Congdon Avenue.

Following an investigation, officers learned that multiple residents in the surrounding areas, including Hillcrest Drive, Howell Terrace, and Clause Drive, may have encountered the fox.

Search for missing Pa. man

JERSEY SHORE, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say they are searching for a man reported missing after he was last seen on Sunday.

Lycoming Regional Police Department is searching for David Benis who was last seen leaving his residence in Jersey Shore, Sunday, February 23.

Police stated Benis left Sunday to visit family in Manhattan but never arrived at his destination. Benis is reported to have mental health issues, officers noted.

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There are calls for action Wednesday to make a Luzerne County intersection safer. This after two deadly crashes in the same area in the past year. The most recent fatal crash took place Monday night.

Near the intersection of West Main Street and Alden Road, a memorial has been set up for the elderly woman who was killed there Monday night.
