2nd Annual Wyoming Valley Run kicks off in Pittston

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of runners were on their way through seven communities in Luzerne County.

The 2nd Annual Wyoming Valley Run kicked off Sunday morning in Pittston.

Runners, walkers, and hand cyclists had a wet start thanks to Saturday's rain, but that did not stop them from tackling the 10-mile course.

The race took participants all the way to Wilkes-Barre where it ended on Public Square.

Scranton mass in Italian in honor of La Festa Italiana

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The third day of La Festa Italiana started with worship. The Annual Mass in Italian was held Sunday morning at Saint Peter's Cathedral in downtown Scranton.

The non-profit, the Italian Colony of St. Lucy assisted with the mass.

The organization traces its roots to Italian immigrants of the Greater Scranton Area.

Recognizing Labor Day weekend with community cookout

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local Labor Day weekend celebration puts the focus on what the holiday is all about. It took place Sunday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre.

Kirby Park was filled with live music, games, and free food all in honor of Labor Day weekend.

The third annual NEPA-que took place Sunday afternoon in Kirby Park. They had a chili cookoff, grilled burgers, hotdogs, and sweet treats.

Senator Flynn introduces memorandum for flying cars

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU)— Yes you read that right State Sen. Marty Flynn, D-22, will be introducing legislation "to allow for roadable aircraft", and looking for some cosponsors.

In an a memo issued on August 28, the flying car "would travel both on roadways as a motor vehicle and flown in the airspace as an aircraft."

You would also need a license for an auto vehicle and a plane to operate the "flying car".

Pennsylvania would only be third state to pass this type of legislation alongside Minnesota and New York.

Start of college football is already impacting local businesses

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU)— The college football season is underway, and that means some local businesses are as excited as the fans.

Those businesses are ready to serve up all the entertainment and specialties.

With Penn State and Notre Dame kicking off their seasons today, business is thriving. It found all eyes were on the big screens at a popular sports bar and a local pub.

Tracy's Hope Pet Walk and Car Show Benefit held in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A local organization which benefits pets in need got a financial boost today to aid its mission.

A pet blessing was just part of a pet walk, car, and bike show at Scranton's McDade Park.

The annual event benefits Tracey's Hope Hospice Care and Rescue for Domestic Animals.

Besides a variety of cars and bikes from yesteryear on display, the fundraiser featured basket raffles, prizes and food vendors.

Railfest takes off this weekend in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— An annual festival for train enthusiasts was held Saturday for the first time since 2019 in Downtown Scranton.

Railfest returned to steamtown national historic site celebrating railroading`s past, present, and future.

The event is free to attend.

Train rides are available to the public with the purchase of a ticket.

Railfest gives both amateurs and enthusiasts a chance to learn about locomotives and celebrate the railroading industry and heritage in NEPA.

Salvation Army gives away bags to children in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— School essentials were handed out this afternoon for free by the Wilkes-Barre Salvation Army.

Bags filled with note books, pencils, erasers and more where given to community members along with a bag of snacks.

All parents had to do was show their ID and write down how many kids they are picking up a bag for.

This is the second year that the Wilkes-Barre Salvation Army is holding this back to school supply give away.

Captain Minicozzi Memorial Race held in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY— A memorial race was held Saturday in Downtown Scranton in honor of Captain James R. Minicozzi, a local U.S. Army veteran.

Minicozzi was on the Board of Directors for La Festa Italiana and an active organizer in the annual race.

Proceeds raised from the event will go to benefit the Boys and Girls Club as well as college scholarships at West Scranton Highschool.

The event is in its 12th year and continues to grow each year.
