Bringing awareness to Low Vision Awareness Month

EXETER, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — February is recognized as Low Vision Awareness Month.

One local nonprofit aims to educate others and make a difference in the lives of people who suffer from blindness and visual impairment.

"For 50 years I was a professional golfer, and that job entailed playing tournament golf and administrating county club activities," said Coleman Plecker a Northeast Sight Services Client.

"I did that all over the east coast of the United States, from Maryland down to Florida," says Plecker.

CODE BLUE issued in Wilkes-Barre for three days

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Wilkes-Barre Mayor George C. Brown has enacted a CODE BLUE designation due to severely cold temperatures on the nights of Tuesday, February 20, Friday, February 23, and Saturday, February 24.

The CODE BLUE Emergency Shelter Program will be run by Keystone Mission with its Emergency Shelter located at the Keystone Mission Innovation Center, 90 East Union Street, Wilkes-Barre.

During a CODE BLUE situation, the shelter will be open to guests to arrive between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and will close at 7:00 a.m. the following morning.

Pro-Palestinian protestors removed from democracy forum

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pro-Palestinian protestors were removed from a Freedom to Vote forum after they interrupted Pennsylvania Congressman Matt Cartwright's speech in Wilkes-Barre.

"Not another nickel, not another dime. No more money for Israel's crimes." That was the message pro-Palestinian protestors chanted as they were escorted from Action Together NEPA's freedom to vote forum.

Former Scranton attorney accused of forgery, tampering with evidence

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A formerly prominent attorney is now facing charges of forgery and tampering with evidence after resigning from his position and being disbarred in 2023 due to a medical malpractice lawsuit.

According to a criminal affidavit on April 29, 2022, Teresa and John Matheson contacted the Pocono Mountain Regional Police to report they believed their attorney, James Conaboy, stole from them.

Remains found in Luzerne County identified as woman missing for 30 years

SUGARLOAF TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police announced remains found in Luzerne County have been identified as a woman missing for 30 years.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on December 12, 1994, skeletal remains of a woman were discovered off Tomhicken Road in Sugarloaf Township, during a mining reclamation project.

For approximately 30 years, investigators followed leads and made comparisons in an attempt toidentify the remains.

Man arrested after shooting in Luzerne County neighborhood

SUGARLOAF TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police were seen actively investigating a shooting at a neighborhood in Luzerne County Tuesday.

Police were seen at a home on Rock Hill Road in Sugarloaf investigating an incident around 11:00 a..m. Before arriving on the scene, police said shots were fired outside of the home.

A man, later identified as Stephen Danko, 53, was taken into custody for the shooting and several weapons were seized, including handguns and rifles.

Remains found in Luzerne County identified as woman missing for 30 years

PD: Standoff ends in arrest, man held pregnant woman hostage

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been arrested after police say a standoff started when he held a pregnant woman hostage inside an apartment bathroom.

According to the Williamsport Bureau of Police, on Monday around 10:00 a.m., officers were called to the 500 block of Lycoming Street, for a disturbance at an apartment complex involving a gun.

Police say a 911 caller told officers the victim, a pregnant woman, had barricaded herself within a bathroom after 20-year-old Rynell Brooks-Brown, pointed a gun at her and made threats to harm the victim.
