PHOTOS: Crews investigating fire at old Scranton train station

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Scranton fire crews were on the scene of a small fire by an old train station on Lackawanna Avenue.

The fire was in the back of the building by an old loading dock.

Scranton officials vote to declare special election

Crews were able to knock the flames out quickly. They did find some evidence of vagrant or homeless items near the scene.

Authorities say there were no injuries and minimal damage to the building.

Mold tests at Wilkes-Barre elementary school come back clean

The principal at Kistler Elementary in Wilkes-Barre says the test results for mold came back clean.

The tests were ordered after custodians spotted white patches in two classrooms on Tuesday.

Man facing charges after hours-long standoff

STROUD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is facing several charges Wednesday night after an hours-long standoff ended in Stroud Township.

The Stroud Area Regional Police Department says they were called to Walnut Grove Road in Stroud Township around 11:35 a.m. for a man reportedly destroying the Walnut Grove community sign with a hammer.

When officers arrived on scene, they identified the man as 29-year-old Alexander Ball from East Stroudsburg, who lived in the community.

Scranton officials vote to declare special election

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lackawanna County commissioners, as well as the county judge, have voted to declare yet another special election in the span of a week. This second special election is to replace the former clerk of courts, Mauri Kelly, whose resignation was effective Tuesday.

The Lackawanna County Commissioners, Bill Gaughan and Chris Chermak, along with county judge Terrence Nealon, met to discuss another special election on Wednesday afternoon.

This time, to fill the vacant clerk of judicial records row office.

Police conducting death investigation in Carbon County

LANSFORD, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— 28/22 News is following a death investigation out of Carbon County.

The body of a man in his 30s who was reported missing on Monday was found on Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area on private property in Lansford, according to a release.

According to the Carbon County coroner, the name is not being released until the family is notified.

State police are handling the investigation.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An alert is out on Wednesday after an attempted abduction of three young girls was reported at La Festa Italiana late last week.

Witnesses say there are two suspects: A white man, somewhere between his 40s and 60s, and a woman carrying a blue purse with white lettering on it.

The incident happened on the night of Friday, August 29.

Three young girls were enjoying the sights and sounds of La Festa Italiana.

Monroe County animal sanctuaries preparing for winter, need donations

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— As we turn the page on summer and look ahead to colder temperatures, local wildlife sanctuaries are starting to prepare.

It is nearly time for the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center to begin "winterizing" their enclosures.

They have several outdoor enclosures that need to be covered before it starts to get cold.

They also need to protect the animals they house using equipment like boat tarps, heated water bowls, and heated huts.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A World War II Veteran was brought back home on Wednesday after 80 years. Seaman Second Class Jerome Mullaney's remains have been missing for over 80 years.

After the US Navy's POW and MIA discovered and identified his body, he is now back home in Scranton.
