49th Annual La Festa Italiana wraps up in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One of the biggest festivals in NEPA wrapped up on Monday: La Festa Italiana, and now it's time for the big teardown. How did this year's Italian culture and cuisine event stack up?

The four-day festival is officially over in downtown Scranton, and those same vendors who were setting up last week in preparation are now taking it all down until next year.

As the sun sets on the 49th Annual La Festa Italiana, organizers are reflecting on the long weekend and another year of success.

NEPA residents dream of what to do with $1B jackpot

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Powerball Jackpot is climbing again, now topping more than $1,000,000,000, and in northeastern Pennsylvania, players say the dream is worth the price of a ticket.

The Powerball Jackpot has now reached an estimated $1,100,000,000. That makes it the fifth largest in the game's history.

It has people across NEPA thinking about what they would do if they won.

Man looking for kidney after decade battling disease

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A Luzerne County man has been waiting a decade for a new kidney. He is sharing his story to hopefully find a donor.

Peter Shaffern of Kingston has been managing kidney disease for the last 10 years.

28/22 News had the chance to sit down and talk with him and his wife about what it has been like waiting for a perfect match.

Peter Shaffern just turned 64 years old last week. He enjoys tinkering with his train sets and woodworking machine to pass the time as he manages a kidney disease and is still waiting for a match.

The Stanley Cup makes a stop in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One of the most iconic trophies in all of sports made a rare stop in Scranton on Monday.

The Stanley Cup's visit to Marywood is all thanks to one special alumnus.

"Family, friends of my family, my grandparents are here. You know, it really means so much to me to bring it back to Scranton," Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Florida Panthers, Mike Joyce, said.

Competitors chow down on ribs for Labor Day charity event

DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Competitors chowed down for a cause on Labor Day in Lackawanna County. Texas Roadhouse in Dickson City hosted a charity rib-eating challenge.

The participating teams, made up of veterans, firefighters, police officers, and EMS workers, to see who could tear through the most ribs.

The winner raised money for the charity of their choice.

Low-cost haircuts given away for back-to-school event

Jeff Hughes, from the Dickson City Police Department, took first place in the contest.

2 in custody after SWAT team responds to gun fight

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two people are in custody after a gun fight Sunday night on Cortez Road in Jefferson Township, Lackawanna County.

Police say they have a middle-aged husband and wife in custody after they confirmed a fire fight happened between the two suspects on Sunday night.

"There was also the worry of the male being barricaded in the house, and he had a history of being suicidal, even going as far as saying he wished to get into a fire fight with the Jefferson Twp. Police and win,"  said Jefferson Township Police Chief Richard Bacon.
