Mulitple people hospitalized after Hazle Township crash

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Multiple people have been brought to the hospital with serious injuries after a crash in Hazle Township.

The Hazle Twp. Fire & Rescue Company says the call came in just before 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon to the 100 block of Stockton Mountain Road.

Monroe County approves temporary homeless encampment location

Fire crews say when they arrived, there was someone trapped inside the car and they had to do a full driver-side removal to get the victim out. Officials say another was ejected and more injured.

Welcome Center closed for roof, facility evaluations in Delaware Water Gap

DELAWARE WATER GAP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Delaware Water Gap Welcome Center in Monroe County off Interstate 80 is closed for roof and facility evaluations.

Damage was found in the interior of the building and they're trying to assess the damage in order to develop a repair plan.

The facility will remain closed until further notice.

Travelers can use the rest stop facilities on I-80 East in Luzerne County and I-80 West in Morris County, New Jersey.

SAYLORSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is facing charges after police say he tried to sell over 500 grams of methamphetamine, and cocaine in Monroe County.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, 46-year-old Robert Stull of Saylorsburg intended to sell over 500 grams of methamphetamine, over 500 grams of cocaine, and a quantity of marijuana in September 2024, in Saylorsburg.

Man charged with selling meth in Luzerne County

(WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been indicted by a federal grand jury after investigators say he was caught selling methamphetamine in Luzerne County.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, 37-year-old Michael Verbitsky of Wilkes-Barre allegedly distributed at least 50 grams of methamphetamine in April 2024.

The maximum penalty under federal law for these offenses is imprisonment for 40 years, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.

Crossroads project to improve roads in Wilkes-Barre area

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — PennDOT has announced a public meeting about the Crossroads Partnership Improvement Project impacting roadways throughout the Wilkes-Barre area.

According to PennDOT, the public is invited to view virtual plans on the Route 6309 Kidder Street and Route 2061 Mundy Street Crossroads Improvement Partnership in Plains Township, the City of Wilkes-Barre, and Wilkes-Barre Township.

Trial starts: scam costs 95-year-old her home

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There was dramatic testimony on Wednesday in the trial of a Hazleton man charged with scamming a 93-year-old woman, who is now 95, out of her house.

Investigators say 35-year-old Jeremy Cieniawa from Hazleton gained the trust of the wheelchair-bound woman and then violated that trust.

Prosecutors called just a dozen witnesses who described Cieniawa as a controlling person, who knew exactly what he was doing and did it for personal financial gain.

BUTLER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A house fire that broke out Wednesday morning is under investigation in Butler Township.

Firefighters were called to Valley View Town Homes on Tuesday for moderate smoke on the second floor of a townhouse.

Firefighters respond to Kingston blaze

Crews discovered that a bedroom closet was on fire. The fire was extinguished and four people have been displaced.

The State Police Fire Marshall was called to determine the cause of the fire and it is underdetermined if the fire is suspicious.

Luzerne Council, county officials to not borrow money in 2025 for public projects

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Good news for Luzerne County taxpayers: For the first time in more than 10 years, the county will not be borrowing money for public projects.

Luzerne County officials consider this to be a big win for taxpayers.

"This decision is not just a number on a spreadsheet or balance sheet, it is a testament to our collective commitment to fiscal responsibility and prudent financial management," said Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo.
