Popular Wyoming Valley band spreading luck of the Irish for Saint Patrick's Day

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A popular Wyoming Valley band was out spreading the luck of the Irish at several local bars and restaurants on Monday.

Playing Irish and Celtic music, members of the Wyoming Valley Pipe and Drum Band have been delighting audiences for 17 years with their charming and upbeat performances.

"The green, the people everything about it I love it. It's my favorite holiday. I love St. Patrick's Day," said Pittston Township resident James Herron.

Detective Gilmartin named Hometown Hero in 111th Saint Patrick's Day Award Dinner

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man who literally put his life on the line for our safety was given a well-deserved honor on Monday. Detective Kyle Gilmartin, who was shot in the line of duty in Scranton in January of 2024, was named a Hometown Hero.

The Greater Pittston Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick gathered for its 111th Annual Saint Patrick's Day Award Dinner in Pittston, the first time it has been held in the city since 1956.

Each year, awards are given to community leaders and residents who have regularly given back to their communities.

Police respond to Wilkes-Barre crash

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Authorities were on the scene Monday night after a reported crash in Wilkes-Barre.

The Luzerne County Communication Center says the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department was called to the intersection of Barney Street and Horton Street at about 8:00 p.m. Monday night for a crash.

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Multiple gunshots can be heard on surveillance video 28/22 News obtained from a viewer. Neighbors say they woke up to the noise and a heavy police presence early Monday morning in Plains Township.

28/22 News is still waiting to hear from police, but neighbors in the area say the police activity on the street is surprising because the area is usually fairly peaceful.

"It was around 4:00 in the morning, a little after 4:00. I heard loud banging: Bang, bang, bang, bang," a neighbor told 28/22 News.

High school student graduating with two degrees

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 12th graders all across northeastern and central Pennsylvania will graduate from high school in just a matter of months.

One of those high school seniors is in rare company. She will graduate with two degrees.

Napoli's Pizza in Pittston is a busy place serving up slices, stromboli, calzone, and other dishes and desserts too.

Perhaps even busier is Maia Costagliola.

The teenager cooks, takes orders, and waits on tables but she has much more than that on her plate.

PLAINS TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Video shows multiple shots fired early Monday morning near a school in Plains Township.

28/22 News received surveillance video of shots fired near the intersection of Abbott and Stocker streets in Plains Township around 4:30 a.m.

In the video, someone can be seen firing four shots from a gun while multiple people are running from the scene. Additional shots are then heard off camera.

Crews battle Wilkes-Barre house fire

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News is waiting to hear if it was the weather or something else that sparked a fire in Wilkes-Barre.

Crews brought a ladder truck to the scene at South Franklin and Sullivan Streets.

Power outages impact thousands across PA

The fire sparked on Sunday at around 3:30 p.m. and caused some neighbors to evacuate.

There is no word if anyone was injured after the fire in the Diamond City.

Storm damage spotted across NEPA

(WBRE/WYOU) — With heavy winds and power outages, many are seeing damage across the Keystone State.

Heavy winds are to blame for downed power lines, backed-up traffic, and closed businesses in Lackawanna County.

Just off the O'Neil highway in Dunmore was where a pole and powerlines have been stripped down.

The pole and powerlines came down around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, and police tell 28/22 News they landed on two cars.

Officials say one woman needed to be checked out by EMS, but she is okay.
