Two accused of over $1,000 retail theft at Target

WILKES-BARRE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are searching for two suspects accused of stealing over $1,000 worth of items from Target.

According to the Wilkes-Barre Township Police Department, on November 4 around 6:00 p.m., the two people pictured committed retail theft at Target.

Home invasion victim allegedly tackles suspect to prevent escape

HANOVER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say the victim of a home invasion in Hanover Township tackled one of the three suspects to prevent him from escaping until officers arrived.

According to the Hanover Township Police Department, on November 4 around 6:00 p.m., a man and a woman were in a bedroom on the second floor of their home on Lee Park Avenue when they heard footsteps outside the door.

Police stated the victim thought it was a family member in the hallway until three men wearing masks with handguns stormed into the bedroom.

LCTA announces route changes and new transit service

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Luzerne County Transporation Authority (LCTA) will hold a public meeting after they announced multiple route changes and a new microtransit service.

New routes and a new microtransit service called LCTA CONNECTS have been unveiled. The new routes are set to run in conjunction with the new CONNECTS service, which is an on-demand app that allows customers to request a ride from anywhere within the service zone boundaries.

Students serve up sweet treats for those who serve

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Local students are preparing to give a sweet treat to those who have served this Veterans Day weekend.

Students at Wilkes Barre Area's Career Technology Center in Plains Township are busy baking cookies to make trays to hand out to local VFWs.

More than 1,900 cookies have been made by the staff and students so far.

Everything from chocolate chip to sugar cookies will go onto the trays.

Pittston man allegedly sends police on high speed chase

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is in custody after police say he sent them on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle.

According to the Kingston Municipal Police Department, on October 25 around 3:55 p.m., officers saw a black SUV drive past at a high rate of speed.

Officers state they initiated a traffic stop on Market Street and South River Street in Wilkes-Barre.

Police say the driver, 18-year-old James Michael Nardone, from Pittston, failed to stop resulting in him running multiple red lights.

Man sent to hospital, hit by truck in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man was sent to the hospital after being hit by a truck on Mundy Street in Wilkes-Barre.

Lieutenant Kistler of the Wilkes Barre Township Police Department stated a 32-year-old man wearing dark clothing was hit by a truck on Mundy Street around 1:20 a.m.

Police say the truck was driving down Mundy Street and attempted to swerve to avoid hitting the victim but the driver ultimately clipped him. 

The victim was taken to Geisinger with serious injuries but his current status is unknown at this time.

Meuser wins PA's 9th Congressional District race

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — In a rematch from the 2020 election, Republican incumbent Dan Meuser has defeated his challenger, Democrat Amanda Waldman in the race for Pennsylvania's 9th Congressional District.

Bomb threat evacuates Luzerne County Election Bureau building

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Luzerne County Election Bureau was briefly evacuated after a bomb threat was received.

Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo tells 28/22 News that they, along with many other Pennsylvania counties, received an email threat that there was a bomb in place inside the building.

Crocamo says the bureau building at Penn Place in Wilkes-Barre did evacuate for a short period as police investigated however the threat does not appear credible.

Jim Haddock declared winner of 118th district race

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Democrat Jim Haddock secured a second term while his opponent, 23-year-old McKayla Kathio ran for the first time for Pennsylvania's 118th Legislative District.

Early Wednesday morning, the Associated Press declared Jim Haddock the winner of the Pennsylvania 118th Legislative District race.

Haddock was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2022 to serve residents in the 118th district that includes parts of Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties.
