Firefighters respond to Kingston blaze

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Firefighters responded to a structure fire in Kingston Tuesday afternoon.

The Kingston Forty Fort Fire Department was called to Third Avenue in Kingston for a reported structure fire at 5:20 p.m.

Pedestrian killed on Route 115 identified

So far, there are no reported injuries, and at 6:05 p.m. the fire was considered under control.

Right now, there is no word on what sparked the fire.

Geisinger Wyoming Valley expansion could cause traffic delays on campus

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center construction work to expand the hospital may cause traffic delays for those traveling within the area.

Geisinger representatives say visitors should allow extra time when traveling to the hospital in case of construction delays, and drivers should be alert for new traffic patterns and signage throughout the project.

Man accused of scamming woman out of home heads to court

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Prosecutors say it's a case of betrayal in its worst form. A 95-year-old woman's lifelong home is sold out from under her by a person she trusted.

Testimony gets underway Wednesday morning in the trial of 35-year-old Jeremy Cieniawa of Hazleton.

Prosecutors say the victim trusted Cieniawa. She thought he was her friend. It turned out, they say, he was the proverbial "wolf in sheep's clothing."

"I'm very angry over this whole thing," said the great-niece of victim Allison Tomczyk.

Father, son fight leads to shooting in Larksville

LARKSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two people were transported after a shooting in Larksville Sunday morning.

According to the Larksville Police Department, Sunday around midnight, officers were dispatched to a home in Second Street for a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, police say they learned two people had been shot, one in the leg and the other in the hand.

The release states the father slapped his son in the face for being disrespectful or loud, which led to a fight with the second son.

The first son had legal possession of a gun, police add.

LCTA launches new microtransit service in Luzerne County

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new form of public transportation should make it easier for commuters to get around.

The Luzerne County Transportation Authority (LCTA) launched its new microtransit service on Monday.

LCTA Connects is a new on-demand rideshare service making its way to luzerne county.

"We have several vans we have three different zones," said LCTA Executive Director Bob Fiume.

LCCC held Annual Veterans Day Program to honor those who served

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Monday is Veterans Day and people gathered for celebrations to honor those who have served.

Luzerne County Community College LCCC in Nanticoke held its Annual Veterans Day Program.

Dozens attended the event in the college's Patrick J. Solano Veterans Center.

It's been opened since 2017.

Honoring local veterans in 79th Wyoming Valley Veterans Day Parade

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — November is a time to honor local veterans and the community did it in a big way on Sunday in Luzerne County.

One of the largest veterans parades around wound its way from Kingston to Wilkes-Barre.

Veterans, active military members, and others who served crossed the Market Street Bridge from Kingston to Wilkes-Barre Sunday afternoon.

They received a patriotic show of appreciation all the way to Public Square.

Many gather in Scranton to help woman fighting cancer

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Family, friends, and loved ones showed up in Scranton on Sunday to help a woman battling an aggressive form of cancer.

Hundreds of people made their way to Saint Anthony Center for what was billed as Benefit for Juanita.

Raffle baskets, t-shirts, and take-out pasta dinners were all ways people could donate and show their support.

49-year-old Juanita Mattern of Dunmore was diagnosed in June with triple-negative breast cancer.
