Motorcycle, car show helps business rebuild

MOUNTAIN TOP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Mountain Top business is getting some help from the community after a big setback.

The women's boutique shop has been sidelined since May following a fire. On Sunday, a good crowd turned out for a show-stopping car and motorcycle show fundraiser.

The funds from the car and motorcycle show will help the owner as she starts from square one.

People packed the parking lots of King's Pizza and Caribbean Smokehouse on Sunday, but they were not there just for food.

Kingston annual 5K helps PA 211 NE/Help Line

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY — It was a nice day on Sunday for a run across the region, and that is exactly what dozens did in Kingston. They took part in the 17th Annual Pauly Friedman 5K Family Walk and Run.

It kicked off at the Friedman Jewish Community Center. The fundraiser also included raffle baskets.

Proceeds go toward PA 211 NE/Help Line supporting vital community services.

New basketball court opens in Dupont

It was a cause near and dear to former JCC board member, Pauline Friedman, for whom the fundraiser is named.

DEP air quality warning for several NEPA counties

(WBRE/WYOU) — The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued an air quality warning for Monday in parts of northeastern central Pennsylvania.

DEP blames wildfires in central Canada for the Code Orange Air Quality Action Day.

New basketball court opens in Dupont

DUPONT, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new blacktop basketball court and walking trail is now open in Dupont.

The community turned out on Saturday for the ribbon-cutting, celebrating the new court and trail on Hemlock and Walnut streets.

The first phase cost about $160,000 and was all funded by grants and help from state legislators.

The old court was considered deplorable, and the Dupont Council President says a walking trail was needed since people were starting to walk the streets.

He also hopes the upgrades send a message.

Raising money for neglected, abused kids at NEPA's Day Downtown

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local event wrapped up on Saturday to raise money for abused and neglected children. NEPA's Summer In The City celebrated its Second Annual Day Downtown in Wilkes-Barre.

The fundraising festival started Saturday morning and continued until 8:00 p.m. It featured something for everyone.

Food trucks, small businesses, and carnival games brought plenty of people to Public Square on Saturday for NEPA's Day Downtown.

Police searching for Weis burglar

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police need help to track down an alleged thief at Weis Market.

Surveillance video caught a suspect who broke into Weis Market on North River Street.

Police say the burglar smashed a front window and made their way into the store Saturday shortly after 4:00 a.m.

Police investigating after man was shot twice

The intruder filled up a bag with candy and may have taken other items.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Plains Township Police Department or message them on their Facebook page.

Splash of community spirit at NEPA Run the River 5K

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There was a splash of community spirit on Saturday in Wilkes-Barre as runners and walkers supported children in need. Nearly 75 participants hit the trail at Kirby Park for the Second Annual NEPA Run the River 5K and Fun Walk.

The race near the Susquehanna featured volunteers armed with water guns to keep runners cool.

The event raised money for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Wyoming Valley as a kickoff event to NEPA's downtown day.

Pickle This Pickle That Pickle Fest kicks off in Forty Fort

FORTY FORT, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — People puckered up for the Pickle This Pickle That Pickle Fest at the Forty Fort Sports Complex. The event featured plenty of pickle-flavored food and pickle-inspired crafts.

With nearly 40 vendors on hand, there was something to relish for pickle lovers of all ages.
