Police investigate crash at downtown intersection

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An intersection was closed down in Wilkes-Barre after a crash Monday night.

Officials say the Wilkes-Barre Police City Department was called to the intersection of North Pennsylvania Avenue and East Union Street shortly after 8:00 p.m. for a reported crash with injuries.

28/22 News saw a Special Operations Vehicles of Wilkes-Barre City arriving at the closed-off intersection.

Elementary student wins national handwriting competition

SHAVERTOWN, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Some of us cannot seem to avoid poor penmanship, no matter how hard we try, but that is definitely not a problem for a 10-year-old Shavertown girl.

Her handwriting is so good that she won a national competition.

A digital pen, an interactive whiteboard, and a steady right hand are all it takes for Kendall Grabinski to demonstrate some of the most proficient penmanship you will ever see.

"I don't really practice it. I'm just kind of good at it," explained Kendall.

Students hop into Easter Spirit in Pittston for 'Bunny Olympics'

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — School students in Luzerne County are getting into the Easter Spirit. The Pittston Area Intermediate Center held its first Bunny Olympics event on Monday.

Hundreds of students in grades three through five took part in the Easter-themed STEAM event, focusing on Science, Art, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics.

They got to compete in activities like building towers out of eggs, or egg races.

Students even got a special visit from the Easter Bunny.

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — People of the Jewish faith have begun the celebration of Passover on Saturday. A local community center and Temple Israel came together for their annual Passover celebration this evening.

The Friedman Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Kingston teamed up with Temple Israel to hold its community Seder on the first night of Passover.

The celebration consists of songs, stories, and symbolic foods.

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of local nurses have a new contract this weekend after a labor stalemate resulted in a pair of strikes earlier this year.

Just two months after calling their first strike, 800 Geisinger registered nurses informed 28/22 News on Saturday that they reached an agreement on a new three-year deal.

It includes average wage increases of 18%, a new workplace violence committee, and protection of benefits that were on the chopping block during negotiations.

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A business in Wilkes-Barre welcomed long lines of customers for a celebration of vinyl. Gallery of Sound on Mundy Street took part again in National Record Store Day.

More than 350 special edition records were available on Saturday, which helped bring out a crowd of customers.

28/22 News spoke with a shopper who camped out since Friday night at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, waiting for the store to open Saturday morning.

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Easter Bunny made a special pit stop in Pittston to deliver treats straight to kids.

Families lined up in their cars on Saturday at the Pittston Fire Station for the city's Annual Easter Celebration.

About 30 cars rolled through the free, drive-thru style event.

The Easter Bunny handed out hundreds of candy-filled eggs to kids.

WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It was all fairies and fun at a local masquerade ball. The Wyoming Valley Chapter of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) held their Third Annual Masquerade Ball Friday night at their church in Wyoming.

Partygoers were able to take part in a fairy-themed costume contest with multiple categories, including good and bad fairy, best fairy couple, and best spring fairy.

The event was complete with an aerial silk show, a fairy-themed costume contest, and raffles.
