Fake endorsement concerns in Lackawanna County

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — From your local election headquarters, a firefighters union is setting the record straight after former president Trump's rally in Scranton.

Officials with Local 60 say multiple citizens were seen with Scranton firefighters for Trump signs at Wednesday's rally when no member of the union was carrying since the national firefighters union chose not to endorse a candidate this election.

Officials went on to say that they honor and respect each and every person`s political opinions when it comes to both candidates

Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Homerun Derby

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Baseball legend and slugger Babe Ruth was honored Saturday in Luzerne County with an inaugural event celebrating a homerun he hit right here in Wilkes-Barre.

On October 12th in 19-26, Babe Ruth played in a barnstorming game at Artillery Park in Wilkes-Barre hitting a ball an estimated 650 feet.

His homerun is considered the longest recorded homerun in baseball history and a plaque in Kirby Park marks where the ball landed.

Sky diving for breast cancer in Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — During Breast Cancer Awareness Month a local skydiving center wants to give cancer survivors and warriors more than just an opportunity to check an item off their bucket list.

Fearfully parachuting 10,000 feet from the sky over Hazleton Regional Airport Brandi Ellis was just happy to land safely on the ground.

"Like oh my gosh, I'm falling, I'm falling, I'm falling and then like you're okay," said Ellis.

Man charged after allegedly threatening to light bed on fire

BUTLER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A Luzerne County man is being charged after he allegedly fired at and threatened to light an air mattress on fire of people he was subletting to.

Butler Township Police charged 55-year-old William Everett, from Drums, following a shooting/fire incident at his residence in Beech Mountain Lakes early Friday morning.

According to a release from the Butler Township Police Department, police responded to an incident on Randy Ridge Court in the Beech Mountain Lakes section around 8:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Dominion takes responsibility for Luzerne County spelling error

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Dominion has taken responsibility for a spelling error that caused the Luzerne County Board of Elections to cancel over 6,700 ballots.

Romilda Crocamo, Luzerne County Manager, released a statement saying:

I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dominion for their collaborative efforts with Luzerne County to address the recent 119th Legislative District ballot issue. I also appreciate the acknowledgement that the County Election Bureau has diligently performed all of its tasks with precision and integrity.

Man found guilty of 3rd degree murder in 2023 shooting

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Wilkes-Barre man has been found guilty of third-degree murder and other charges after a woman was shot dead last year according to police.

Natanihel San Martin was found guilty of third-degree murder, two counts of recklessly endangering another person, and endangering the welfare of children after he allegedly murdered a woman in February 2023.

Wyoming Area Secondary Center dismisses students due to gas odor

WEST PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A school in Luzerne County is dismissing early after officials say the smell of gas could be detected.

According to a post from the Wyoming Area Intermediate Centers Facebook page, the Secondary Center will be evacuating and dismissing students early on Friday after the gas smell was noted.

The school states that students were dismissed starting at 11:45 a.m.

Man turns himself in after alleged rape

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say a man has been charged with rape by forcible compulsion, and indecent assault of a person less than 16 years old after turning himself in.

According to Hazleton Police, Arvin De Jesus Mercedes, 20, turned himself in on October 1. Police say the charges come from an investigation involving the rape of a juvenile female.

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — On Thursday night, many residents got a look at the northern lights covering the Northeast Pennsylvania skies.

When captured with a low-exposure camera, the starry night sky of NEPA showed bright pinks and greens against its typical blue.
