Kids smiling brighter thanks to free dental clinic in Nanticoke

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Dozens of local kids are smiling a little brighter thanks to a free dental clinic. Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) hosted its Kids' Dental Day Saturday afternoon at the Benco Dental Clinic in Nanticoke.

Children ages three through 17 got free dental cleanings and checkups from second-year students in LCCC's Dental Hygiene Program.

The kids enjoyed 10 fun interactive stations hosted by first-year students, each with prizes and fun characters.

Tables even gave away dental hygiene tools like toothbrushes and floss.

New Jersey military unit removes explosives from Luzerne home

LUZERNE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An out-of-state military unit made another trip back to our area on Saturday to remove hundreds of explosive devices. They were discovered inside a Luzerne County home Friday afternoon.

Special military members with the Fort Mcguire New Jersey Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit collected more military ammunition from the home at 384 Bennett Street in luzerne.

They were called in on Friday night in addition to the Scranton Bomb Squad and Luzerne Borough Police.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— New deputies are ready to serve in Luzerne County.

The sheriff's department held a swearing-in and awards ceremony Friday at the Luzerne County Courthouse.

The newest members took their oath of office, while current deputies were honored for outstanding service.

Tenured Sheriff Brian Szumski also presented the first-ever "Deputy of the year" award.

He says the ceremony highlights his team's dedication to serving and protecting Luzerne County.

EXETER, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— The Luzerne County Historical Society will have a new place to preserve and teach about the area's rich history.

The society purchased Saint Cecilia Church on Wyoming Avenue in Exeter which closed in 2022.

Once renovations are completed, it will serve as a unique resource for the county holding historic county artifacts and museum exhibits.

Society officials say this is just an expansion of the organization and will still continue to operate at their current Wilkes-Barre locations.
