White Haven's inaugural Art Walk

WHITE HAVEN, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Elsewhere in Luzerne County, the arts are getting a little love and appreciation thanks to an inaugural event.

The White Haven Chamber of Commerce hosted its first-ever art walk.

Nearly two dozen artisan vendors set-up shop at four different sites across the borough including at White Haven Library.

The art restoration business Trinity Artisans and White Haven Borough Building.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Chalkfest took place Saturday afternoon in Luzerne County in honor of Smokey the Bear's 80th birthday. The kid-friendly event also included some educational activities for the youngsters and live music for all to enjoy

This was the sight Saturday at Wilkes-Barre River Commons. Parents, guardians, and their kids all came out to enjoy Chalkfest.

BB gun shooting under investigation in Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say they are investigating a BB gun shooting in Hazleton Friday afternoon.

According to the Hazleton City Police, officers were called to West 10th Street and North Locust Street for a possible gunshot victim.

Police say they learned that a group was sitting outside when the victim felt a sharp pain on the right side.

HANOVER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are investigating a death at a construction site in Hanover Township Friday afternoon.

According to the Hanover Township Police Department, officers were called to Plymouth Avenue for a report of an unresponsive man at a construction site.

Man accused of giving alcohol to teens, assaulting girl

Police confirm that the man has died, however, details of what led to his death have not been revealed.

Former Crestwood band director sentenced for student sexual assault

WRIGHT TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A former band director and music teacher at Crestwood High School has been sentenced for inappropriate contact with a student.

A judge has sentenced Theron Roberts to two years in prison on the following charges:

Institutional sexual assault

Corruption of minors

Indecent assault on a person less than 16-year-olds

Indecent assault forcible compulsion

Harassment

Night of glitz in Wilkes-Barre with Dress for Success

Dress for Success Wilkes-Barre held its annual Downtown Diamonds fundraiser at the Westmoreland Club.

Kids sent to hospital after school van crash in Hazle Township

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A scary moment for local school students and their van driver after they crashed into a wooded area in Hazle Township.

The crash happened earlier Thursday afternoon and several students were sent to the hospital.

Hazleton Area School students are now safe and back with their parents after police say failed brakes led the school van to crash behind an apartment complex on Thursday.

State to make permanent fix to Toby Creek mine subsidence in Luzerne

LUZERNE BOROUGH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The state is working to complete a permanent fix to a mine subsidence that was draining a creek in Luzerne County.

Earlier this month, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) found Toby Creek seeping through the same area in Luzerne Borough that was previously fixed in April.

A temporary plug put in over the weekend appears to be working.

The DEP says it will use the material to fill in space around the rocks in the creek bed with work wrapping up next week.

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Fall foliage, pumpkin patches, cider, and campfires. Many people in northeastern Pennsylvania know the tell-tale signs that the fall season is upon us. But one autumnal treat you may not be as familiar with; pumpkin pie'rogi.

NEPA'rogi in Nanticoke is combining two local favorite foods into one. They recently started making what they're calling "pumpkin pie'rogi", a pierogi-like shell stuffed with pumpkin pie filling.

"It's a fun fusion of the original pierogi and the fall dessert," says Lauren Gorney, owner, NEPA'rogi.

Woman hospitalized, garage damaged after Wilkes-Barre crash

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A woman had to be taken to a nearby hospital and a home's garage was badly damaged after a car crashed into a Wilkes-Barre home Wednesday.

Officials told 28/22 News they were called to Brader Drive around 3:30 p.m. for reports of a car into a home.

Repairs underway to ruptured Snyder County sewer line

Captain Eric Serafin of the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department says the woman's vehicle hit several objects before hitting the garage of a home.
