CODE BLUE issued in Wilkes-Barre for three days

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Wilkes-Barre Mayor George C. Brown has enacted a CODE BLUE designation due to severely cold temperatures on the nights of Tuesday, February 20, Friday, February 23, and Saturday, February 24.

The CODE BLUE Emergency Shelter Program will be run by Keystone Mission with its Emergency Shelter located at the Keystone Mission Innovation Center, 90 East Union Street, Wilkes-Barre.

During a CODE BLUE situation, the shelter will be open to guests to arrive between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and will close at 7:00 a.m. the following morning.

Pro-Palestinian protestors removed from democracy forum

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pro-Palestinian protestors were removed from a Freedom to Vote forum after they interrupted Pennsylvania Congressman Matt Cartwright's speech in Wilkes-Barre.

"Not another nickel, not another dime. No more money for Israel's crimes." That was the message pro-Palestinian protestors chanted as they were escorted from Action Together NEPA's freedom to vote forum.

Remains found in Luzerne County identified as woman missing for 30 years

SUGARLOAF TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police announced remains found in Luzerne County have been identified as a woman missing for 30 years.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on December 12, 1994, skeletal remains of a woman were discovered off Tomhicken Road in Sugarloaf Township, during a mining reclamation project.

For approximately 30 years, investigators followed leads and made comparisons in an attempt toidentify the remains.

Man arrested after shooting in Luzerne County neighborhood

SUGARLOAF TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police were seen actively investigating a shooting at a neighborhood in Luzerne County Tuesday.

Police were seen at a home on Rock Hill Road in Sugarloaf investigating an incident around 11:00 a..m. Before arriving on the scene, police said shots were fired outside of the home.

A man, later identified as Stephen Danko, 53, was taken into custody for the shooting and several weapons were seized, including handguns and rifles.

Dr. Laurel Harry, Secretary Department of Corrections stated Kevin Ransom resigned as the superintendent of SCI Dallas on Friday, February 16.

Man wanted for Target retail theft, allegedly stealing adult toys

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police were searching for a man who they say stole adult toys from Target.

According to the Wilkes-Barre Township Police Department, on February 19 around 6:00 p.m., a man entered the personal care aisle in Target and selected two items.

Police say the suspect opened the packaging, hid the items, and walked out of the store without paying for the concealed merchandise.

Residents in Exeter community without water

EXETER BOROUGH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Residents in one Luzerne County community say they've been without running water all day.

According to the residents at the Birchwood Estates mobile home park in Exeter Borough, over 150 homes have no running water after a pipe broke.

28/22 News spoke with residents who tell us this is a re-occurring issue.

The water stopped running around 6:00 a.m. Monday and the people who live here say there's been no bottled water delivered to help them out.

Community members, elected officials gather for forum

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Dozens gathered at a local university earlier Monday to discuss voting rights and a way to protect them. Among the crowd were legislators who were hoping to make a difference in democracy.

The Freedom to Vote forum was hosted by Action Together NEPA and held at Wilkes University on Monday evening, focusing on the Freedom to Vote Act and the importance of voting.

The event drew top Pennsylvania lawmakers who spoke about voters' rights.

One year since Edwardsville church caught fire

EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Monday marks one year since one former church community in Luzerne County was devastated by a fire at their former place of worship.

The former Saint Hedwig's Church in Edwardsville caught fire in the early morning hours of February 19, 2023.

4-hour long standoff ends in Lycoming County

St. Hedwig's closed in 2007 and held many memories for dozens of locals since it was founded in 1901.

No one was hurt in the fire. The church has since been demolished.
