Dumpsite cleaned up in Luzerne County

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— An area along the west bank of the Susquehanna River is now free from a buildup of trash.

Crews from Wilkes-Barre and Edwardsville teamed-up today to clean up the dump site at Nesbit Park.

Hazleton Area enhance security measures for safety

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Hazleton Area School District, the largest school district in Northeastern Pennsylvania, is making major upgrades to its school safety system.

Those upgrades include "hi-tech" sensors that can detect smoke from gunshots and pick up keywords such as "emergency" or "help".

The security upgrades also include a special window film that hardens windows from intruders, gunfire, and severe storms.

Military unit from New Jersey called in to investigate explosives

LUZERNE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police blocked off a home and roadways in Luzerne Borough Friday afternoon as they investigate explosives found in a home.

Around 1:40 p.m., police blocked off a home in the 300 block of Bennett Street between Sly and Academy Street.

Investigators say they were awaiting local bomb squad personnel to check out the home in question, but the Scranton Bomb Squad said the amounts of items found in the home is too much for their unit to handle.

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two communities teamed up to clear a large dumpsite along the west bank of the Susquehanna River after it was discovered by public works crews.

Public Works Departments from Wilkes-Barre City and Edwardsville Borough spent Friday morning clearing the piles of debris from a wooded area near Kirby Park.

"The accumulation of garbage was discovered by Wilkes-Barre City DPW crews after the homeless encampment in Kirby Park was cleared in late March by the city," said Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown.

Firefighters warn of misleading fundraising letters

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Area fire chiefs are expressing concerns about a fundraising letter that is showing up in Northeastern Pennsylvania seeking financial donations to support volunteer firefighters.

The letter is being sent by a nonprofit organization based out of state.

Local fire chiefs say the letter may cause confusion when it comes to local fundraising efforts and reduce financial donations to local fire departments.

Man charged with DUI, kids allegedly at home alone with oven on

BUTLER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been charged with a DUI and child endangerment after getting into a crash while his kids were left at home alone.

James Bradley, 43, is facing charges after officers responded to a crash on February 23, where they say his car fell down a creek in Butler Township.
