Community speaks out about proposed drug rehab center

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Luzerne County nursing facility could soon become a drug rehabilitation center.

And that proposed plan has people from several communities concerned about what it could do to their neighborhood.

Community college meeting the need for welders

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Welding is a popular and promising occupation in Pennsylvania, with employment numbers expected to increase by six percent or more this year.

One area college is finding a way to meet that need.

Coordinators at Luzerne County Community College say the interest in their welding program is meeting the need.

Speed limit restrictions put in place across NEPA

(WBRE/WYOU)— The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has implemented speed limit restrictions across three interstates in our area due to winter weather in our area.

PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit to 45 mph and restricting commercial vehicles to the right lane on the following interstates:

Interstate 81 from Dunmore to the New York line in Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties.

Interstate 81 from Luzerne County line to Interstate 80 in Luzerne County.

Interstate 84 in Lackawanna, Pike, and Wayne counties.

Dominicans request flag flown at Hazleton City Hall

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A controversy is unfolding in Hazleton over a request to fly the Dominican Republic flag at city hall.

The President of the Dominican House, an organization that assists Latino immigrants mainly those from the Dominican Republic requested to fly the Dominican flag at city hall on March 1 in honor of the country's 181st anniversary of its independence.

Mayor Jeff Cusat (R) denied that request saying only the American flag and the Pennsylvania flag fly over city hall and offered other options.  

Five arrested for alleged Walmart theft

HAZLE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police report that five people were arrested after being accused of retail thefts at a Walmart in Luzerne County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers responded to Walmart in Hazle Township for separate retail theft incidents from January into February.

On January 9 around 6:40 p.m., troopers said they were called to Walmart for a theft where two people, a 53-year-old man, and a 56-year-old woman stole $56.16 worth of food items.

Victim identified after deadly house explosion

SUGARLOAF TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The victim of a deadly house explosion in Luzerne County has been identified.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on February 12 around 4:30 a.m., troopers were called to Cabana Lane in Sugarloaf Township for a fully engulfed fire.

Fox captured after attacking many residents

During the search effort, 32-year-old Aaron Moore was found dead inside the home.

The fire completely destroyed and collapsed the house and also damaged the siding of the home next door.
