PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An event in Luzerne County is giving young minds a look at many of the possibilities that could shape their future.

A day for career exploration.

"This is to really get students exposed to all of the things they can do with their life after high school," Susan Magnotta, President of Junior Achievement of Northeastern Pennsylvania, explained.

Close Call: Dumpster rolls down Pine Street in Pittston

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Watch the video of a dumpster rolling down Pine Street and onto Main Street in Pittston.

The Pittston City Fire Department said they saw the video on Facebook, went over to Pine Street, and the dumpster was already moved.

Pittston Police Chief Kyle Shumosic says there was no property damage, nobody was injured, and there is no investigation into what happened.

One displaced, home destroyed after fire

FOSTER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One person is displaced after a fire destroyed their home in Foster Township.

According to Fire Chief Mike Spock of Foster Township Fire Department, one cat is dead and a dog is missing after the fire in the double-block house.

Victim of deadly Avoca house fire identified

The side with the fire is a total loss and the other side of the double block has smoke damage.

Spock said the call came in around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and the fire marshal is on the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.

Victim of deadly Avoca house fire identified

AVOCA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The victim of a deadly house fire in Avoca has been identified.

According to an obituary, Michele Williams, 65, was the victim of a house fire on Main Street in Avoca on March 23.

Firefighter taken to hospital after Wyoming County fire

Williams' body and the remains of her dog were found after firefighters got control of the flames.

The home sustained heavy interior and exterior damage, with almost all of the windows broken and fire damage to the roof. The fire took roughly three hours to get under control.

Man faces charges after pedestrian hit by car near Sheetz

WILKES-BARRE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is being charged after police say he hit a pedestrian near Sheetz and left the scene.

According to the Wilkes-Barre Township Police Department, officers were called to Sheetz on March 31, around 2:50 a.m., for a reported hit-and-run involving a pedestrian.

Police said the pedestrian informed them that he was leaving Sheetz when he was struck by a car from behind and knocked to the ground. The vehicle then fled the scene without stopping.

Dual enrollment student graduating twice this year

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — High school seniors are counting down the months until graduation, but for one teenager, that countdown is two-fold.

Not only will he earn a high school diploma, but also will receive an associate's degree.

Nathan Higgins loves to run. The Crestwood High School senior has excelled as a member of his school's cross-country and track teams.

"I've made states all three years I was varsity, and I medaled at districts twice in my most recent two years," Nathan explained.
