Friends, family gather in Wilkes-Barre for cold case vigil

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Wilkes-Barre murder cold case dating back nearly two decades is still making an impression.

Family and friends gathered Saturday afternoon outside the Luzerne County Courthouse to remember Patricia Morton.

The 35-year-old woman was found shot to death in her Hazle Street home in 2006.

Her loved ones have been holding a vigil every year since her death.

After a prayer, they signed balloons with a message of love in memory of Moreton and released them into the sky.

Brew pub hosts benefit raising money for Little League concession stand

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A summer sport is what's on the minds of organizers of a fundraiser at a brew pub near Wilkes-Barre.

Benny Brewing Company hosted a benefit on Saturday featuring a buffet and live entertainment.

Funds will be used to renovate the concession stand at Hanover Township Little League Field and provide critical upgrades and repairs.

The group Little League Legends which is part of Leadership Northeast Core Class of 2025 sponsored this fundraiser.

Helping patients, searching for cure through 'Carve 4 Cancer'

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The weekend weather is cooperating for some winter fun at local ski resorts, including one hosting a fundraiser to help patients battling blood cancer.

Skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes on Saturday at Montage Mountain for the 13th Annual Carve 4 Cancer event.

Besides shredding and skiing, the crowd enjoyed much more, including music, food, beverages, and raffles.

Carve 4 Cancer began more than a decade ago thanks to a blood cancer patient and Wilkes-Barre native Brent Evans. He lost his battle with the disease in 2017.

PA Game Commission confirms 2 deer test positive for CWD in Luzerne County

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Game Commission announced two deer have tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Two adult male deers tested positive for the disease in Luzerne County 40 miles from the closed CWD case.

Hazleton YMCA reopens after almost 6 years

One of the deer was from a farm, which will now be under quarantine for the next five years to keep the fatal disease from spreading.

At this time, there is no evidence that CWD can be spread to humans or other species under natural conditions.

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — After being forced to shut its doors nearly six years ago due to financial troubles, The YMCA in Hazleton will reopen.

Today local and state leaders gathered at the facility for a ribbon cutting to celebrate.

After years of work, people in Hazleton will once again have a YMCA. It is a space they will use for childcare, wellness, and community.

"It's tremendous. It's so exciting. We've waited for this for so long," said Leann Fallabel, YMCA Hazleton Advisory Board.
