Man charged with assault after vomiting on officer

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say a man vomited on an officer while being arrested after a fight.

On March 25, around 5:50 a.m., officers were called for a fight in the 600 block of Seybert Street. Police said they learned 23-year-old Tyress Martinez of Allentown had returned to a home where he was trespassing earlier in the night when a fight happened.

500 doses of fentanyl seized, alleged drug dealer wanted

W. HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are searching for a man wanted after investigators seized over 500 individual doses of fentanyl and various other drugs.

According to the West Hazleton City Police Department, 38-year-old Eldor Mendez-Cabrera from Hazleton is wanted for his role in a drug distribution operation.

After a months-long investigation into area drug trafficking, police said they seized the following;

Over 500 individual doses of fentanyl

87 grams of cocaine

101 misbranded pills that were made with fentanyl

Opioid settlement money being put to use in Luzerne County

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A drug treatment program in Luzerne County is getting a big boost. The County Council is taking action to make sure treatment is there to help people battling addiction.

This money, $267,000, is coming from a larger settlement the county received to battle opioid abuse.

The vote was unanimous.

Council Chairman John Lombardo says the vote came after the department approached the council to supplement a lack of funding from the state this year.

Wilkes-Barre coffee shop still brewing after burglary

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local coffee shop was broken into, but they say they are still brewing. The owners at Abide Coffeehouse in Downtown Wilkes-Barre say someone kicked in their office door and stole hundreds of dollars.

Security footage shows someone in the business just before 2:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The person looked behind the counter before making their way to the office, where they pried open the door and stole money.

Nursing students at LCCC can access new clinical tool

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Nursing students at Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) now have access to a new hands-on clinical tool.

School administration says it's something that will help them keep up with new technology and better serve patients. Nursing students can take their learning a step further with the use of five new bedside laptop computers.
