Shed fire threatens Nescopeck Township home

NESCOPECK TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A shed went up in flames and threatened to catch a home on fire in Nescopeck Township Tuesday night.

Officials say the Nescopeck Township Fire Company was called to the 600 block of Zenith Road for a reported fire at about 6:10 p.m.

Alleged arsonist charged with attempted murder

A member of the Nescopeck Township Fire Company says the fire broke out at a shed next to a home on Zenith Road.

No one was injured in the fire and some of the siding melted off the home but it did not catch fire.

Government change will be on the ballot in Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hazleton residents will be faced with a ballot referendum question in the May primary election regarding the possible formation of a government study commission.

Council approved the ballot question less than a month after the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit against the city.

It claims the current "at-large" method of electing council members is discriminatory to the city's Latino population.

Idling car stolen while warming up

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say an investigation is underway after a car, idling to warm up, was stolen.

On February 2 around 2:45 pm. officers were called to the Carson and 12th Street area in Hazleton City for a report of a stolen vehicle.

Officers said that the owner of a 2012 Dodge Avenger went outside and started the car to warm it, then went inside to wait. When the owner went to leave, they noticed the car was gone.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, February 7, at 10:00 a.m. There will be an exclusive pre-sale for Kirby Members on Wednesday, February 5, at 10:00 a.m.

Target retail theft arrest leads to drugs seized

WILKES-BARRE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A woman was arrested after police say she was stealing over $100 worth of items from Target and was later found with drugs.

Wilkes-Barre Township Police say they arrested Candis Lazovich, 35, of Plymouth on February 1 after Target Loss Prevention caught her concealing and under-ringing items at self-checkout worth $143.95.

Following her arrest she was found to have $3,600 in cash and possession of multiple controlled substances, officers reported.
