Howling good time in 6th Annual Howl-O-Ween Parade as pets marched in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It was a howling good time at a park in Scranton on Sunday. The Sixth Annual Howl-O-Ween Pet Parade was held at McDade Park

Pets were graded in five different categories, including scariest, cutest, and most original.

79 pets participated in the pet parade.

The Scariest Award went to a donkey costume, while the Cutest was a pumpkin patch costume. A spaghetti and meatballs costume took the Funniest Category and a costume referencing the Pixar movie, Up, included with balloons, won Most Original.

Fence credited for preventing suspects from releasing most mink in Rockefeller Township

ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Fur Commission USA is crediting a perimeter fence for preventing suspects from releasing most of the mink there.

A security camera caught two people trespassing on the Richard H. Stahl Son's Mink Farm near Sunbury very early Saturday morning.

About 200 mink were released this time.

A year ago, this same fur farm was targeted when thousands of mink were illegally freed from their cages.

Crews to work on Interstate 81 in Luzerne County

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Drivers should be on the lookout for likely traffic issues on Interstate 81 to start the work week.

From Monday to Thursday, lane restrictions will be in effect in the Wilkes-Barre area so crews can do some bridge deck patching.

Structure fire sends one firefighter to hospital in Lackawanna County

The work is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in the Southbound lanes between mile markers 167 and 169.

The project will shift to the Northbound lanes on Wednesday and Thursday between mile markers 168 and 169.

Fire companies gather to discuss future of volunteer fire service in NEPA

OLYPHANT, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Volunteer fire departments all face a similar challenge: They are struggling to get people to join.

On Sunday afternoon for the first time, several fire companies got together to discuss the future of volunteer fire service in northeastern Pennsylvania.

The fire at an Olyphant apartment building could have been a whole lot worse if not for the number of volunteer firefighters who raced to the scene.

The problem for many communities these days is beefing up the number of dedicated men and women to answer the call.

Structure fire sends one firefighter to hospital in Lackawanna County

OLYPHANT, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A Sunday morning fire damaged a house with apartments inside.

According to the Lackawanna County Center for Public Safety, crews were called to the 200 block of Sanderson Ave for a reported structure fire just before 9:30 a.m.

When on-scene crews encountered a smoky blaze, that could be seen throughout the county.

Officials say the fire was under control by 10:15 a.m.

Chief Tratthen of the Excelsior Fire Company #1 stated that one firefighter transported with minor injuries.
