The 'Greatest Show on Earth' comes back to Luzerne County

EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — They call it the "Greatest Show On Earth" and it's returning to Northeastern Pennsylvania this week.

And Wednesday night, a premier all-star cheerleading program got a sneak peek at the entertainment the popular circus will be showcasing in Luzerne County.

The Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus begins its three-day spectacular show this week right here in Wilkes-Barre.

A preview and a chance to show off their skills days Wednesday in front of a group of young local gymnasts.

Black Rock Brewing Company awaiting inspection

POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — After a small fire nearly a year ago, a brewery in Pottsville remains closed by order of the city, but that hasn't stopped them from making use of their outdoor property.

The brewery will host its second event since the fire in the upcoming weekend, the prior one ended with multiple fines.

Black Rock Brewing Company will host an outdoor event this weekend just about a month after being fined for their free beer party.

Two people injured in car crash in Avoca

AVOCA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There was a heavy police presence Wednesday night in Avoca.

According to the Avoca Police Department, first responders arrived in the 600 block of Main Street in Avoca, around 8:54 p.m. on Wednesday, for a reported car crash into a pole, in front of Lyon's Barber Shop and Panache Hair Salon.

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, COLUMBIA COUNTY 9WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) announced Tuesday that a Benton man was with felony burglary and related charges.

According to PSP, on Sunday, April 14 around 9:00 a.m. trooopers responded to the 60 block of Old Green Creek Road in Jackson Township, Columbia County for a reported burglary in progress.

PSP says upon arrival they made contact with 32 year old, Steven McCloskey, of Benton, in the front yard of the victim's home on Old Green Creek Road.

Interest grows in mine subsidence insurance in Luzerne County

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With an area so rich in coal mining history, many homes in our region have mines under them that homeowners don't even know about.

Since the recent mine subsidences in multiple parts of Luzerne County, there has been a rise of interest in insurance that covers that type of disaster.

"Unfortunately, you know, until something happens in the area we are reminded of the concern," said Joyce Insurance Group Personal Lines Manager Lynn Berkhimer.

A mine subsidence is nothing new to northeastern and central Pennsylvania.

Industries honor 'National Work Zone Awareness Week'

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), and Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC) announced Monday the honor of National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW).

To honor roadway workers, everyone gathered at Soldier's Grove on Monday to honor those who work on the roadway and remind drivers to slow down and use caution while in a work zone.

President Biden's last stops in Scranton

Volunteer Fire Company prepares for its new beginning

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A volunteer fire company is getting some new digs. The Meredith Hose Company in Childs, Lackawanna County has begun moving its equipment into a new building.

After 76 years in the original fire hall, Meredith Hose Company is starting a new journey in a new building right behind the original.

"If we wanna grow, we gotta move," said Tony Aileo Fire Chief of Meredith Hose Company.

After years of expanding the original fire hall to fit the company's needs, Meredith Fire Hall finally got a new home.
