Police continue investigation into Wilkes-Barre home

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police were back at the home on 142 Carlisle Street in Wilkes-Barre where unidentified remains were found.

That investigation began when officials discovered those unidentified remains.

Due to the decomposition of the remains, we don't know whether they are animal or human.

DEP findings on Dunmore Dam sediment

A forensic anthropology team from Mercyhurst University in Erie was called to the scene last week. They specialize in identifying remains.

Detective Gilmartin attends State of the Union address

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The Scranton Police Officer who has inspired northeastern Pennsylvania with his recovery from an ambush shooting was a special guest at the State of the Union address.

Detective Kyle Gilmartin and his wife were there as guests of Congressman Matt Cartwright.

Although many eyes were on President Biden Thursday evening, it's safe to say in NEPA, 28/22 News were on the lookout for Detective Gilmartin.

Gilmartin was shot twice in the head in January, making the honor of attending the State of the Union more like a miracle.

Luzerne County man sentenced for bank robberies

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Thursday that a Wilkes-Barre man was sentenced to seven years in prison for multiple bank robberies that took place in 2023.

30-year-old Damen Drakeford was sentenced on March 7 by United States District Court Judge Julia K. Munley to 84 months in prison.

Drakeford entered a guilty plea previously and admitted to committing four bank robberies, two in Pennsylvania and two in New Jersey, in July 2023, according to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam.

Residents displaced, dog rescued from Loyalsock Township fire

LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Firefighters rescued a dog from a fire that left a home destroyed in Loyalsock Township.

Authorities were called to the 2000 block of Northway Road at 2:51 p.m. Thursday for a reported structure fire in Loyalsock Township.

Fire Chief Rich Caschera Jr. of the Loyalsock Volunteer Fire Company told 28/22 News the fire was determined to be a total loss.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — New findings into why the Lackawanna River and Roaring Brook Creek are filled with cloudy, dirty, and muddy water.

An investigation from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has indicated that Pennsylvania American Water Company has violated state regulations.

The 1900 block of Myrtle Street in Scranton overlooking a section of the Roaring Brook Creek is one of seven locations DEP officials observed for any potential sediment in the water.

College preparing for food drive in Luzerne County

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — March is National Nutrition Month and Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) is getting ready for a large food drive on all their campuses. This drive is for students who might need assistance finding something to eat.

"In conjunction with National Nutrition Month, Luzerne County Community College decided that we're gonna hold of campus-wide food drive," said LCCC Wilkes-Barre Campus Director Adam Blannard.

Plymouth home collapses due to aging

PLYMOUTH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A home collapsed in Plymouth Thursday morning.

Officials say they were called to Gould Street.

Three arrested for alleged burglaries in abandoned Luzerne County home

When they arrived they found an old, vacant home. No one was inside at the time of the collapse and no nearby homes were damaged.

Crews are now being called in to demolish the old house.
