Wearing denim for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

SCRANTON, LACKAWANN COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month Wednesday marks National Denim Day, a campaign started by a controversial court ruling in Italy over two decades ago.

In Lackawanna County, the day has received official recognition.

National Denim Day is more than just a fashion statement, it is a stand against sexual violence, and the Lackawanna County Commissioners stand with the Denim Day Movement.

In April, the last Wednesday of the month is Denim Day, a campaign for misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

Griffin Pond Animal Shelter sees uptick in surrender requests 

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Animal shelters across our region are packed with pets waiting to find their forever homes. The humane society of Lackawanna County has seen a dramatic increase in surrender requests and they're desperate for help.

Pet owners are encouraged to have a backup plan that ensures their pets are properly cared for.

Lane restrictions on I-380S in Lackawanna County

LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced there will be lane restrictions on Interstate 380 (I-380) southbound in Lackawanna County on Thursday.

According to PennDOT, the lane restrictions will be on I-380 southbound from Exit 22 (Moscow) to Exit 20 (Daleville) in Lackawanna County for bridge deck repairs on Thursday, April 25.

Seven Tubs Recreation Area now reopen

PennDOT says crews will be actively working on Thursday from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

DUI checkpoint set in Pennsylvania

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — State police announced DUI checkpoints will be placed across various roadways in Pennsylvania.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols aim to deter drinking and driving. Police say they are operating with a “zero-tolerance enforcement policy.”

Police say one or more checkpoints and roving patrols will be placed on roadways across PA the weekend of May 17-19 that are experiencing high rates of DUI-related traffic violations and DUI-related crashes.

Seven Tubs Recreation Area now reopen

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Seven Tubs Recreation Area located off Route 115 within Pinchot State Forest District, has officially reopened.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR), The Seven Tubs Recreation Area reopened on Friday, April 5.

The DCNR announced the temporary closure of The Seven Tubs last year to improve the recreation area with a $1.5 million project.

Three accused of committing credit card fraud at Walmart

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are searching for searching for three suspects who allegedly stole a credit card and used it at Walmart.

The South Abington Township Police are asking for help with information regarding the identity of the individuals caught on camera.

Wrestling coming to Misericordia University

DALLAS, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Breaking in the new mats, former U.S. Olympian wrestler Ken Chertow shows off a move or two of the sport he’s soon to be head coach of, women’s wrestling at Misericordia University.

“It just wasn’t common for girls to wrestle and now it’s becoming more of an accepted thing. I’ve been advocating for women for over 20 years to wrestle and I’m just excited there are opportunities now.”

Wilkes-Barre police investigating two shootings

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two shootings are under investigation in Wilkes-Barre City.

According to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department, on Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday morning, two shooting incidents were reported.

On Wednesday around 2:00 p.m., officers were called to the area of South Franklin Street and Ingham Street for a report of gunshots being heard in the area. Officers said on the scene found evidence indicating that shots had been fired, however, no persons or property were struck by the gunfire.

Man sentenced for hiding body after deadly drug overdose

PIKE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Court officials report a man has been sentenced for hiding a woman's body after a deadly overdose.

According to Pike County District Attorney, 31-year-old Sean Engle of Tafton, was sentenced to probation for 18 months and fined $800.00 for the crimes of abuse of a corpse

AVP offering nonstop flights to Myrtle Beach

AVOCA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport announced Wednesday morning a new summer seasonal flight service.

Starting on June 20 Breeze Airways will offer nonstop one-way flights to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Thursdays and Sundays.

“Team AVP has looked forward to the return of non-stop service to Myrtle Beach and we’re glad that Breeze Airways will provide that service to Northeastern Pennsylvania and our area travelers,” stated Carl R. Beardsley, Jr., AVP Executive Director.
