SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local ballet company in the Electric City is getting ready for this year's performance of The Nutcracker.

Dancers at the Scranton Civic Ballet Company have been hard at work practicing for their upcoming shows.

Dance Instructor Elizabeth Gaus Satterlee has gone on to have a career as a professional ballerina, but has returned to NEPA each year around the holidays to help the younger generations of dancers polish their choreography and help put the magic of the holidays into dance.

Stroudsburg set to light Christmas Tree

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With the flick of a switch, the region's tallest Christmas tree is officially lit.

On Wednesday, the Annual Tower Lighting was celebrated by hundreds as they kicked off the holiday season in Downtown Scranton.

More than 400 bulbs are all lit up and illuminating the Electric City.

The traditional lighting is a proper start to the holiday season here in the city.

What sounds like a countdown to the new year is really a kick-off to this year's Christmas season in downtown Scranton.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Firefighters were on the scene of a fire that broke out causing a partial collapse of a building Wednesday night in Scranton.

Authorities confirmed with 28/22 News the Scranton Fire Department was called shortly before 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night for a reported structure fire.

There was a collapse on the rear side of the building, officials say.

Sergeant Robert Stanek of Scranton Fire Department told 28/22 News crews arrived on scene and found flames coming through the roof of the pallet factory.

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — In Monroe County, Stroudsburg residents know the place to go to get their meats for the holidays. Citera Family Meat Market, formerly Gary's Meat Market, was packed on Wednesday.

They took over four years ago and continue the tradition of providing the area with a variety of meat and other products.

Storm system approaches NEPA for Thanksgiving

Long-time customers go there to stock up for the holidays and go beyond just turkey for their Thanksgiving meal.

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Stroudsburg Borough set up their tree at Courthouse Square Wednesday morning.

Every year before Thanksgiving, they get a tree from a local farm to decorate and display.

This year, they got their tree from Baumgartner Farms in Kunkletown.

Dunkelbergers Tree Service brought it in and Stroudsburg Public Works decorated it.

Continuing Annual WEJL Tower Lighting tradition in Scranton

The tree lighting event is preparing to kick off the holiday season.

Thanks to the communities generosity hundreds of families will be able to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

It's an annual holiday tradition. Handing out thousands of turkeys to families in need. The Family-to-Family Drive-Thru Food Basket Giveaway is stationed at the Scranton Cultural Center.

People lined up in person on North Washington Avenue or around a block or two in their cars.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A construction project in Scranton has been delayed.

Nay Aug Avenue was supposed to close on Tuesday for the Green Ridge Bridge replacement project.

Restrictions on I-81, I-476 for Thanksgiving snow storm

PennDOT officials tell 28/22 News Nay Aug Ave is open and a new date for the project has not been set, sighting weather for the rescheduling delay.

The new bridge is expected to be up by 2026.

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Thanksgiving is on Thursday which makes Wednesday Thanksgiving Eve, otherwise known as Blackout Wednesday, one of the biggest drinking days of the year.

That's why PennDOT and local law officials are reminding folks to think about their safety this holiday season.

In 2023, 74% of the road collisions that occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend were attributed to impaired driving.

"This all started back in the 1960s when people got together from the radio stations here that were a part of our family group of people and they wanted to make our tower which is a focal point of downtown something festive so they decided let's put lights in the tower," said Times Shamrock Media Senior Vice President and Marketing Manager Terry Deitz.
