Pittston festival wraps up with Tomato Pageant

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pittston Tomato Festival is winding down on Sunday after celebrating a time-honored tradition. The Little Miss and Mister Tomato Pageant returned for another year on Sunday.

The 42nd annual contest brought dozens of kids, dressed in their festival best, to the stage.

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A massive number of kids enjoyed a day full of activities absolutely free for families. More than 2,000 children turned out for the Hazleton Area Children's Festival.

The event in Hazle Township featured games, crafts, and interactive exhibits like touch-a-trucks.

Organizers hoped to inspire young children and teens to demonstrate many opportunities available to them, while entertaining them, too. It certainly seems that the goal was met.

House condemned after Scranton fire

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A house is condemned after a fire in Scranton.

The house on the 700 block of Birch Street caught fire Saturday night around 10:30 p.m.

According to Scranton Fire Department Chief John Judge, the fire appeared to have started in the basement of the vacant home.

No one was reported inside at the time, and no one was hurt.

Chief Judge says both the fire and the police departments are working on the investigation.

From splash to dash in Back Mountain Triathlon

HARVEYS LAKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of triathletes have a big sense of accomplishment on Sunday. They swam, biked, and ran their way at the Back Mountain Triathlon. Not only does it challenge athletes, but it also helps local nonprofits.

Around 250 athletes dove into Harvey's Lake for the first leg of the Back Mountain Triathlon, taking on a nearly one-mile swim, a challenging bike ride, and a run to the finish line.

The course is tough, but for many, it's also tradition.
