Build-N-Athlete Inaugural Race steps off in Lackawanna County

BLAKELY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Cars were not all that were on the streets in part of a Lackawanna County community on Sunday. Runners took off from the Blakely Borough complex and onto the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail for the Inaugural Build-N-Athlete Race.

Participants had the choice of a 5K or 10K course, while children could do a Fun Run.

The run benefits Build-N-Athlete, a non-profit that works toward removing financial barriers that may prevent children from participating in sports.

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A ceremonial ribbon cutting marks an improvement at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.

The event was held on Sunday at the facility near Clarks Summit to mark the completion of renovations to the lobby.

The leadership Lackawanna team made the lobby their project to benefit staff, volunteers, and the animals who come there.

Raising the flag in Scranton to mark start of Pride Month

The city has been holding this ceremony since 2018. They consider it a symbolic show of support and inclusion, and to demonstrate the Electric City's commitment to the LGBTQ+ community.

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The month of June marks Pride Month, and the heart of the Poconos kicked it off on Sunday in a big way. The Fifth Annual Pocono Pride Festival filled the streets of downtown Stroudsburg Sunday afternoon.

A huge crowd turned out for the event featuring dozens of food and craft vendors.

Pride flags hung from light posts, and live performances from musicians to drag performers filled the festival's center stage.

Organizers say the event aims to bring the community together by celebrating love.

Quality of life citations were filed last week against K-B Crash Creations in West Wyoming.

The company specializes in extracts from kratom, an organic material used to make numerous products, including tea.

Lackawanna County pool now open for 2025 season
