FEMA denies disaster declaration in Lackawanna County

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said no to a disaster declaration for our area after severe storms and flooding in September 2023.

It's been more than six months since that night, and many local communities are still trying to recover.

Many roads, bridges, homes, and businesses were damaged or destroyed and two lives were lost. Now, many local officials are discouraged for those who need help.

Firefighters battle blaze in Northumberland County

ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Firefighters were out in Northumberland County Wednesday after a fire broke out in Rockefeller Township.

Officials say multiple fire crews were called to the 400 block of Lahr Road in Rockefeller Township at 3:50 p.m. for a reported structure fire.

No one was in the building at the time and crews battled the second-alarm, fully involved fire with a tanker task force, officials say.

PSP DUI checkpoints result in three arrests

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — State police report a sober checkpoint was conducted over the weekend resulting in the arrests of three drivers.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers conducted sobriety checkpoints on March 16 on various roadways in Northumberland County.

Two accused of drunken disturbance at Great Wolf Lodge

Police say the checkpoints resulted in 70 drivers being pulled over, three DUI arrests, and one drug possession arrest.

Knoebels looks to hire hundreds at upcoming job fairs

ELYSBURG, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Would you consider a job at an amusement park like Knoebels, filled with fun, food, and fantasy?

Knoebels Amusement Park is preparing to open for the season on April 27 and they are hoping to hire several hundred new seasonal team members at four upcoming job fairs.

Knoebels officials say they are looking for future team members who apply, interview, and get hired on the spot by attending one of the following upcoming job fairs:

March 23 at Shamokin Area High School from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Price Chopper in Taylor to permanently close

TAYLOR, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Price Chopper supermarket in Taylor, will permanently close in April.

The Price Chopper Supermarket located on 1510 South Main Avenue announced that the store will close on Friday, April 19.

"After thoroughly reviewing the store’s current and future viability, we concluded that closure is the appropriate action to take," said Blaine Bringhurst, Price Chopper/Market 32 president.

MOUNT CARMEL, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Representatives from the Pennsylvania lottery stopped by Friendly Choice Food Mart in Mount Carmel with a big check.

Oliver Golden won $1,000 a week for life on a scratch-off ticket called the Game of Life.

The Northumberland County resident said they would use the prize money to pay for a trip to Disney World and Ireland.
