Charges filed in deadly 2023 crash

MOUNT CARMEL, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A woman involved in a deadly crash was in Northumberland County court Wednesday.

On October 16, 2023, officials say a woman and two children were driving on State Route 487 near Industrial Park Road when a Nissan Rogue on the other side of the road swerved into their lane and caused a head-on crash. 

As a result of the crash, a 13-year-old passenger died and the woman driving suffered serious injuries.

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — A new study has revealed where in America older drivers are most likely to be involved in fatal crashes, with Northumberland County cracking the top ten.

A Board-Certified personal injury attorney Dismuke Law, researched fatal crash records between 2017 and 2021 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The study looked at the number of drivers aged 65 and older who were involved in deadly collisions in each county across America - only counties with a minimum of 50 drivers involved were included in the study. 

Work Zone Speed Safety Camera Program begins

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the PA Turnpike Commission announced Tuesday the beginning of the statewide Work Zone Speed Safety Camera Program.

PennDOT says the program, previously referred to as Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement, was an initial five-year pilot program that was made permanent after Governor Josh Shapiro signed it into law in December 2013.

Vehicle crash closes road in Northumberland County

UPPER AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A vehicle crash in Upper Augusta Township caused one road to shut down in both directions.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) on Tuesday, a vehicle crash with downed utilities caused Route 4012 (Snydertown Road) to close in both directions between Black Mill Road and Eleventh Street in Upper Augusta Township, Northumberland County.

Investigators rule deadly Northumberland County fire accidental

POINT TOWNSHIP, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Investigators say they have determined the cause of a fire that killed two people and hospitalized another in Northumberland County.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, the early Monday morning fire was caused by discarded smoking materials.

Day two of coroner’s inquest underway for 1970 cold case

State police said the discarded smoking materials ignited the light combustibles in the surrounding area leading to a larger fire.

Two dead, one flown to burn center after Northumberland Co. fire

POINT TOWNSHIP, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two people are dead and another person has been flown to a burn center after a fire in Northumberland County.

First responders in Northumberland County are coming together after a fire broke out at a home in Northumberland County Monday morning, killing two people and sending a third to the hospital.

At 12:45 a.m., first responders were called to the 100 block of Johns Way, Point Township, for a reported structure fire.

Former Northumberland County probation officer sues county for alleged sexual harassment

WILLIAMSPORT — An ex-Northumberland County Probation officer said she was sexually harassed by supervisors in the department prior to her being wrongfully terminated in 2022, according to a lawsuit filed on Feb. 26 in the U.S. Middle District Federal Court.

Coroner called to Northumberland County police incident

NORTHUMBERLAND, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Officials say the coroner has been called to the scene of a police incident in Northumberland County.

Details are limited at this time, but first responder officials tell us that police were dispatched to the report of shots fired in the 400 block of Duke Street just after 10 p.m. Thursday night.

Local police departments, state police, and a special emergency response team were all dispatched to the incident according to the Northumberland County Communications Center.

Man charged with homicide in Northumberland County

WEST CHILLISQUAQUE TOWNSHIP, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One man is being charged with homicide after an alleged stabbing in Northumberland County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), on Friday, February 23, troopers received a call from Northumberland County 911 regarding a 28-year-old stabbing victim.

Troopers say the victim, identified as Kyle Christensen had been stabbed multiple times in the torso.

PSP says they identified the man who stabbed Christensen as 22-year-old Preston Bennett.
