A traffic light still lifeless after four years

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A traffic signal has been the topic of local debate ever since it was installed four years ago.

The problem now? That traffic light still has not been turned on, and people living nearby are saying something needs to be done.

28/22 News Reporter Avery Nape tried to find out why the light was installed in the first place, and how neighbors are feeling about it.

Restaurant owner pushing to save local church

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A local restaurant owner is now taking on a new mission: saving an old church.

28/22 News reporter Joe Mason has his story from Wilkes-Barre.

"You don't knock down an ancient, historic, sacred place when there's a group that's willing to take it," expressed Demetri Patitsas, chief servant leader, The Greek Shack.

Demetri Patitsas owns the Greek Shack restaurant and food truck in Luzerne County.

Patitsas is a man of faith.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Flu season is almost here, and the city of Wilkes-Barre wants to keep people safe.

A flu vaccine clinic was held at the farmers' market on the Public Square on Thursday.

People of all ages living in the city were able to receive a free flu shot.

The city health department's "Bee healthy" bus was also present, providing free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings throughout the day on Thursday.

Jim Thorpe is busy preparing for its annual Fall Foliage Festival, which kicks off this weekend.

Guests can enjoy live music, crafts, and food vendors.

You can also take a train ride overlooking the beautiful scenic Lehigh River Gorge.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A delectable annual Greek food festival is back in Wilkes-Barre.

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on East Ross Street is serving up classic Greek dishes.

Everything from baclava, to gyros, cheese pie, even dessert.

The festival is take-out only, and pre-orders by phone or online at least two hours in advance are encouraged.

The domestic violence service center hosted its annual Empty Place at the Table vigil inside the Luzerne County Courthouse.

The purpose of the vigil is to remember and honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence in Luzerne and Carbon counties.

Victims identified after house fire leaves five dead

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Carbon County Coroner Mark Smith released the names of the five victims who died in a tragic fire on Wednesday morning.

The coroner's office identified the victims as 37-year-old Aida Marrero, 14-year-old Kaylee Quevedo, one-year-old Nathaniel Wheelock, five-year-old Aiden Wheelock, and six-year-old Mathias Wheelock.

The cause of their deaths is considered an accident due to inhalation of products of combustion and thermal injuries.
