Court rejects petitions to keep Pa. revenue secretary from testifying in state Senate

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court rejected two legal petitions seeking to prevent Secretary of Revenue Patrick Browne from testifying before the state Senate about his refusal to turn over certain tax records concerning a redevelopment district in Allentown.

Camelback Resorts to host career fairs in Tannersville

TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The winter season is almost here and soon Camelback Resort will be filled with snowboarders and skiers.

To help accommodate the thousands of guests they see on the mountain, the resort in Tannersville will host career fairs to recruit candidates for full-time, part-time, and seasonal jobs.

More than 200 positions are available, including culinary services and snow tubing attendants.

Scranton high school lockdown serves as reminder of security's importance

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — West Scranton High School was on high alert Tuesday after an incident forced the school into lockdown. Police say two teenagers have been arrested for trespassing.

Tuesday's lockdown at West Scranton High School is a reminder of how important security measures and lockdown drills are in today's world.

"The very first thing was ensuring the safety of my students and staff," said West Scranton High School Principal Renee Stevens.

Eight polling location changes in Luzerne County to know

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Board of Elections for Luzerne County announced previously eight locations in the county have been changed ahead of the upcoming election.

On October 10, the Luzerne County Board of Elections announced locations of eight polling places were changed in Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, and Wright Township.

In Pittston City, Wards 02 and 03, originally located at the Pittston Memorial Library, has been moved to the Saint Joseph Morello Church at 237 William Street.

Helring pension revoked by Scranton Police Pension Board

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The City of Scranton Police Pension Board voted unanimously to revoke the pension of a former police officer convicted of a felony.

48-year-old Paul Helring was sentenced in June after pleading guilty to theft charges.

Officials say from March 2021 to May 2022 Helring was paid to work extra patrol shifts at a lower-income housing complex, but he did not actually work.

In addition to prison time, Helring had to pay nearly $18,000 in restitution.

Casey Highway road closures throughout October

LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Olyphant police announced road closures will be placed throughout the Casey Highway for the end of October.

According to the Olyphant Police Department, Kriger Construction Inc. announces the following road closures for construction work;

Lackawanna County releases 2025 preliminary budget

October 21st and 22nd: Casey Highway West to Tigue Street/I-84 interchange

October 23rd and 24th: Interstate 84 to Casey Highway East

October 25th and 26th: Casey Hwy West to 81 South

More charges levied against woman accused of vacation fraud

MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — People across NEPA defrauded of thousands of dollars after being ripped off by a travel company.

South Abington Township, Scranton, and Archbald Borough Police say 69-year-old Eileen Miner from West Pittston is facing felony theft and fraud charges, after taking money from victims through her travel company, Thompson Tours.

Police say Miner took around $50,000 from victims through her travel company.

Man sentenced for possessing child sexual abuse content

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — A Stroudsburg man has been sentenced after producing images containing the sexual exploitation of a child.

According to The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, 50-year-old Christopher Horsefield has been sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment, followed by a 10-year supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam stated between November 2022 and August 2023, Horsfield acquired, created, and distributed child pornography including some which Horsefield personally created with minors.

JD Vance holds rally in Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With just 20 days until election day, the campaign trail ran through Pennsylvania. Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Senator JD Vance held a rally in Williamsport.

The VP nominee gave a quick and short speech late Wednesday afternoon inside Liberty Arena.

More than 1,000 people attended the rally to show support for the Republican ticket.

"Look, I have got the easiest job in American politics. I just have to defend the record of Donald J. Trump," Vance explained.
