Suspect in custody after allegedly firing at troopers

BEECH CREEK, CLINTON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is in custody after he allegedly fled from and fired at troopers Tuesday night.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers were serving a warrant on a man identified a Brandon Bitner, at his home on the 2000 block of Eagle Valley Road in Bald Eagle Township just before 9:00 p.m..

Bitner fired a round with a shotgun towards troopers, then fled in his vehicle on PA-150, state police explained.

Residents hear out developers over proposed data center

JESSUP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Some communities are trying to adopt ordinances to better protect their residents from these colossal campuses. 28/22 News Reporter Avery Nape attended a meeting in one of those communities.

While many are pushing back against the development of these proposed centers, residents 28/22 News heard from at Tuesday's meeting were not entirely against them.

Monroe County fire department gets new wheels

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Monroe County fire department got some new wheels. The Stroudsburg Fire Department got a new Utility Terrain Vehicle on Tuesday afternoon.

They say the UTV will provide quicker access to homes and fires that are not easily accessible.

Crews also say this will help in the event of a wildfire.

The station's new ride was made possible thanks to a $74,000 grant and State Representative Tarah Probst, who was at the fire station for the unveiling.

New inclusive playground opens at Luzerne County school

DALLAS, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There is a new inclusive playground at Dallas Intermediate School. The Boundless Playground provides all types of children the opportunity to play with their friends and grow a community within the school.

State and federal grants were driving forces for the project to be completed for the start of the school year. The dallas township police department also made a large donation.

The long wait was worth it for the community in Dallas.

Crews monitoring oil spill in Lycoming County

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Monitoring continues after an oil spill in Lycoming County over the weekend.

The spill came from a tank breach on 2nd Street in Williamsport Sunday evening.

Local officials remind drivers about school bus safety 

As a result, oil waste product was dumped into the city's storm sewer system.

Emergency crews, including the sanitary authority and DEP, quickly responded to the scene.

Authorities say the spill is now contained and officials continue to monitor environmental conditions closely.

Commissioner pushing for resolution to board vacancy

LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Lackawanna County Commissioner Chris Chermak is pushing for a quick resolution to the county board vacancy.

He says operating with only two commissioners for nearly six months has slowed down business.

Commissioner Matt McGloin resigned in March.

Education Association calling on lawmakers to pass budget

Chermak wants the State Supreme Court to deny Commissioner Bill Gaughan's petition so the vacancy can be filled under the Home Rule Charter.

Man injured as hitch smashes windshield on I-80

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is in the hospital after he was severely injured while driving on Interstate 80 in Monroe County. The family is now asking anyone with information to contact them.

63-year-old Peter Luck was driving along I-80 eastbound near the East Stroudsburg exit, Friday, when a hitch off of the back of a commercial tractor-trailer flew off.

The hitch flew directly into Luck's windshield.

Education Association calling on lawmakers to pass budget

SCOTT TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— With back-to-school season beginning soon, the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) is airing frustrations with the budget holdup in Harrisburg.

Tuesday's press conference was brief, but it was made abundantly clear what educational leaders in the state are looking for from state lawmakers.

"Senator Brown, students and families in your district need you to stand up for them and finalize a budget that invests in Pennsylvania schools where 90% of our students learn," voiced Jeff Ney, Vice President, PSEA.
