Detours active in Wilkes-Barre during sinkhole repair

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — PennDOT has announced new long-term detours while crews repair a sinkhole.

Blackman Street was closed at the intersection of Carlisle and Huston Streets on June 25 due to the sinkhole. The estimated time of reopening has yet to be determined.

Car Detour from Blackman Street to San Souci Parkway:

Turn left onto South Main Street.

Continue on South Main Street for 1 mile.

JACKSON TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been sentenced to prison after he admitted to shooting and killing his brother.

John Kilpatrick, 35, previously pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for shooting his brother, 30-year-old Kevin Kilpatrick, at their home on Chase Road in Jackson Township in August 2023.

Court officials state Kilpatrick has been sentenced to 42-84 months minus over 400 days he has served in prison since his arrest.

17-year-old dies after Seven Tubs water rescue

PLAINS TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Authorities report a 17-year-old has died after being rescued from Seven Tubs Recreation Area Sunday.

Mike VanLuvender, Captain of the Plains Township Fire Department, said that fire crews received a call around 7:20 p.m. on June 29 for a male in water that hadn't resurfaced.

Half an hour later, crews discovered the victim, and he was not breathing. Captain VanLuvender stated that life-saving efforts were performed, and he was transported to Geisinger.

COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Investigators say a man is facing charges for allegedly killing his wife after the victim's sister and a search party discovered her remains in a box on the property he used to own.

37-year-old Vincent Harp, of Hemlock Township, was arrested Sunday and faces charges of criminal homicide, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence in the death of his wife, 33-year-old Katlyn Harp.
