Man pronounced dead two weeks after crash

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Hazleton man struck by a car over two weeks ago was pronounced dead at a Lehigh County hospital Sunday morning.

First responders say they were called to the intersection of North Church Street and 8th Street in Hazleton for a pedestrian struck by a car around 8:00 p.m. March 16.

Officials say 68-year-old Michael A. Mumaw, from Hazleton, was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, with multiple traumatic injuries from being struck by the car.

ROSS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A home was destroyed early Sunday morning after a fire.

According to Sweet Valley Fire Company, Crews responded to a second-alarm fire on the 20th block of Harris Pond Road just after 4:00 a.m.

When on scene, the home was fully engulfed, according to Captain David Pall of the Sweet Valley Fire Company.

Officials say that everyone got out, and no one was injured.

The home is a total loss, according to Captain Pall.

16th Annual Transgender Day of Visibility kicked off

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local organization brought together the community in Luzerne County to gain support for the trans and non-binary community.

It was a night to celebrate the 16th annual Transgender Day of Visibility on Public Square.

NEPA stands up and other organizations joined together to get their message across through art, music, and storytelling.

Easter vigil mass takes place in Plains Township

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Many people flocking to churches throughout northeastern Pennsylvania Saturday evening for Easter vigil services.

Hymns and a bonfire began the mass at Saints Peter and Paul church in Plains Township.

"The service of light" was used for the flame of the paschal candle. The flame was then passed along to parishioners who were given taper candles.

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local girl's dream continues to soar; her exotic bird rescue has moved to a new location in order to help even more winged animals.

Evlyn's Exotic Bird Rescue and Adoption is ready to rescue more birds in their new space.

They said they needed to expand when they realized just how many birds in the area needed to be rescued.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A 13-year-old girl is being charged as an adult with homicide after stabbing a woman to death, according to police.

Police have charged 13-year-old Lataya Powell with homicide after a coroner was called to a home in the 20 block of South Sherman Street in Wilkes-Barre.

According to the Wilkes-Barre Police Department, around 12:30 p.m. they responded to reports of an unresponsive woman who was not breathing.

Paul's Law takes steps toward being signed into legislation

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Making roads safer, is the goal of Senate Bill 37 also known as Paul's Law.

On Tuesday the bill made it passed the House of Representatives' Transportation Committee, which means the bill is one step closer to becoming law.

The bill is named after Paul Miller a Scranton man who was killed in a car crash in 2010 by a distracted truck driver on a cell phone.

"I don't want anyone else to lose a life," said Eileen Miller, Paul's mother and a road safety advocate.
