Fatal drowning after water rescue attempt in Union County

UNION TOWNSHIP, UNION COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— One person has been confirmed dead after an attempted water rescue on the Susquehanna River Saturday night in Union County.

According to officials, fire departments and water rescue teams from multiple counties were called to the 100 block of Silo Lane for a capsized boat just after 7:30 p.m.

Water rescue teams remained in the water until a woman was recovered from the water.

New installations made to Toby Creek in Luzerne County

LUZERNE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Improvements were made to Toby Creek after mine subsidence issues started last Sunday.

According to the DEP, a cofferdam was installed on Sunday into the creek to stop the flow of water into the subsidence. These are often used to prevent the flow of water into an area that needs to be dried out.

DEP Spokesperson Colleen Connolly stated that eighty cubic yards of concrete was also pumped into the subsidence today which was topped with more clay and rocks which allows the flow of water to increase.

Volunteers of America clean up Kirby Park

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — While runners zipped through the park, volunteers made sure the paths were clear this Earth Day weekend.

A group with NEPA for Volunteers of America Pennsylvania spread out around Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre picking up trash and making the park more welcoming for the community.

One organizer said they also cleared up areas around the homeless near the park clearing trails for families while respecting those less fortunate.

The F.M. Kirby Center is holding one of its annual events and it's all to help local children in our area.

The 6th annual Kirby Fest in downtown Wilkes-Barre. The event kicked off at 5:00 p.m. and will continue till 7:00 p.m. and they have so much to offer.

What you can expect at this event is local beer, wine, cider, spirits, and food tastings they even have live entertainment.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Getting steps in to support a good cause. April is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.

The Junior Leadership Northeast Class of 2024 hosted a 5k at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre to benefit the Luzerne County Child Advocacy Center.

"Everyone's here for just the cause to help these children, and it's a great day. a big crowd, and a lot of smiling happy people here to support this," said Edward Murphy from Harvey's Lake.

"I just love helping the kids and it was really fun," Jance Wallace from Dallas.

Fire damages home in Luzerne County

BUTLER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A fire damaged a home in Luzerne County on Saturday morning.

According to the Valley Regional Fire Department, Crews responded to a second-alarm fire on the 20 block of Maple Street just after 9:00 a.m.

No one was injured, but it is unsure if the home will be a total loss, according to authorities.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The recent concern about the mine subsidence in Luzerne County has created some curiosity about our region's coal mining history.

During a private tour, 28/22 News was on at Lackawanna coal mine, a mine foreman broke down the way mine subsidence has been making its way to the surface.

Others who were also on a tour themselves say the subsidence has sparked their interest in the rich history of coal mining in our area.

LUZERNE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— It's been almost a week since mine subsidence opened up at Toby Creek in Luzerne, and we have an update on how DEP officials are fixing the problem.

Candle lighting ceremony held for victims of Carlisle St.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Candles and balloons filled Wilkes-Barre Friday evening, held by those who honored the lives of the two women who were cut short.

Many came to pay tribute to both Fox and Cuevas, regardless of their relationship to them.

It was certainly an emotional night in Wilkes-Barre as people filled Public Square to remember the two women.

Community and family members alike stood together to say goodbye to Fox and Cuevas.
