Students hit pavement for Opioid Awareness Month

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Local pharmacy students organized a yearly opioid awareness walk.

April is Opioid Awareness Month and students at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre hit the pavement Thursday to make others aware of the epidemic.

The students also sell t-shirts and hotdogs and all proceeds are donated to the Wilke Barre Fire Department.

140 birds seized during cockfighting investigation

SUGARLOAF TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Officials from the district attorney's office say 140 birds were seized from a Luzerne County home during an investigation into the possible breeding and fighting of roosters.

First Assistant District Attorney Tony Ross told 28/22 News on Thursday, April 11, a collaborative effort between multiple agencies served a warrant at a home in the 400 block of Sugarloaf Heights Road in Sugarloaf Township to investigate a possible rooster gamecock breeding/fighting facility. 

Shots fired behind Luzerne County school, juveniles charged

WEST HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Officials say two juveniles have been charged in a gang-related shooting behind a Luzerne County elementary/middle school.

At 7:50 p.m. Monday, the West Hazleton Borough Police said they were called for the report of shots fired behind the West Hazleton Elementary/Middle School.

PSP: Man recording traffic stop arrested, charged with obstruction

Investigators say they learned that two groups had exchanged gunfire on a sports field behind the school as part of an ongoing feud between local gangs.

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police say they arrested a man for interfering with a traffic stop by refusing to record the stop from the other side of the road.

At 5:46 p.m. on April 12, state police say they were conducting a traffic stop when 56-year-old Mario Castro, from Freeland, approached the stop to record what was happening.

State police say this is not the first time they have encountered Castro recording their investigations.

The 'Greatest Show on Earth' comes back to Luzerne County

EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — They call it the "Greatest Show On Earth" and it's returning to Northeastern Pennsylvania this week.

And Wednesday night, a premier all-star cheerleading program got a sneak peek at the entertainment the popular circus will be showcasing in Luzerne County.

The Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus begins its three-day spectacular show this week right here in Wilkes-Barre.

Two people injured in car crash in Avoca

AVOCA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There was a heavy police presence Wednesday night in Avoca.

According to the Avoca Police Department, first responders arrived in the 600 block of Main Street in Avoca, around 8:54 p.m. on Wednesday, for a reported car crash into a pole, in front of Lyon's Barber Shop and Panache Hair Salon.

28/22 News crews on the scene said the vehicle that struck the pole was being towed away.

Interest grows in mine subsidence insurance in Luzerne County

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With an area so rich in coal mining history, many homes in our region have mines under them that homeowners don't even know about.

Since the recent mine subsidences in multiple parts of Luzerne County, there has been a rise of interest in insurance that covers that type of disaster.

"Unfortunately, you know, until something happens in the area we are reminded of the concern," said Joyce Insurance Group Personal Lines Manager Lynn Berkhimer.

A mine subsidence is nothing new to northeastern and central Pennsylvania.

Two arrested, crystal meth, fentanyl seized in drug raid

CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two people were arrested after police say a K9 unit helped seized fentanyl, meth, and other narcotics during a drug raid.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, two people, Kenneth Urian and Bailee Bloxham, were arrested on felony possession with intent to distribute crystal methamphetamine, and related charges in Carbondale.

Kirby Ave. railroad crossing to be repaired

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State Representative Alec Ryncavage has announced the permanent repair at the Kirby Avenue Railroad Crossing.

According to the release, State Rep. Ryncavage announced he engaged with the Reading Railroad Government Affairs office to expedite the repair process for the Reading Railroad crossing at Kirby Avenue.

"The intersection at Kirby Avenue has been a source of frustration and safety concerns for residents and commuters due to its deteriorating condition," said Ryncavage.

Wilkes-Barre CTC student arrested, allegedly found with gun

PLAINS TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Officials report a student of Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center was arrested after being found with a gun on school property.

Dr. Anthony Guariglia, Director of Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center (CTC) tells 28/22 News a student was found with a gun while entering the school Wednesday morning.

Dr.Guariglia said around 8:00 a.m. students were entering Wilkes-Barre CTC through metal detectors when the machine beeped for one male student.
