Harris campaign visits Lackawanna County day before election

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Election Day is on Tuesday and both candidates are making a final push to voters in battleground states.

On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris visited our area.

28/22 News Reporter Julie Dunphy was there when Harris spoke to hundreds in the Electric City earlier Monday evening.

Vice President Harris started her crisscross of Pennsylvania on Monday in Scranton, a final push less than 24 hours until the polls open.

10 year old makes name for herself in NEPA

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A 10-year-old girl from Luzerne County is making a name for herself, not just here in our community but across the nation.

In this week's Here's to You Kid, 28/22 News Reporter Jagne introduces us to the little tennis star.

10-year-old Mya Anyan practicing with her dad who is a big part of why she plays.

"I started playing tennis when I was five on the court and holding a racket when I was three my dad also played tennis too and his dad trained him so that's also why I'm playing tennis too," Mya said.

Security measures in place at Luzerne County polling places

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — We are about 15 hours and counting away until polls open in Pennsylvania. Election officials from around the Commonwealth and in northeastern Pennsylvania are making their final preparations for Election Day 2024.

The Bureau of Elections is located on the second floor of the Luzerne County-owned Penn Place Building.

The barricades outside the office are part of added security for the building.

Woman dies in Plymouth house fire

PLYMOUTH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One woman has died after a fire in Plymouth Monday morning.

150 acres lost in Blue Mountain brush fire

Crews were called to a fire on Morris Street in Plymouth around 8:00 a.m. Monday.

The fire spread to an adjacent building, causing two homes to catch fire, and a third house to sustain water damage. According to Plymouth Fire Chief Josh Evans, a woman died in one of the homes.

A fire marshal has been called in to investigate.

Valor Clinic Foundation holds Stand Down Event in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Some local homeless individuals are a little more prepared for the coming winter.

Valor Clinic Foundation held its monthly Stand Down event on Sunday in Wilkes-Barre.

The outreach program gave around 50 homeless people basic necessities, such as clothing, food, and personal care items.

The handouts are either donated or purchased with cash donations.

One firefighter injured after battling blaze in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— One fire fighter was injured after battling a Sunday morning blaze in Wilkes-Barre.

Multiple units were called to Carey Avenue at around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning for a reported structure fire.

According to Chief Jay Delaney, crews were called to the former Master Chemical Products on Carey Avenue for a structure fire.

When on-scene, units found heavy smoke inside the building with smoke coming from the roof.

Veterans Parade honors veterans in Luzerne County

PLYMOUTH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Veterans Day is just over a week away and some communities are already honoring area vets.

The first Veterans Parade in Plymouth stepped off this morning in honor of those who have served.

This parade was organized by the Rotary Club of Plymouth to show veterans in the community, and throughout our area just how much they are appreciated.

The organizers say they could not have done this without the help and support of the community.

Gwen Walz campaigns in NEPA for the Democratic ticket

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With just five days to go it's a battleground blitz in the Keystone State with our 19 electoral votes up for grabs.

In the final days of campaigning, vice presidential candidate Tim Walz's wife Gwen made a stop in Wilkes-Barre rallying for the Democratic ticket.

This packed room was filled with supporters of Harris and Walz as election day nears. During the First Lady of Minnesota's visit, she touches on several topics concerning this election.

28/22 News also spoke with a volunteer who knocked on more than 1,000 doors.
