Couple charged with $1 million theft from elderly estate

WEATHERLY, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — We are learning more tonight about the investigation into a Carbon County couple who a Federal Grand Jury indicted after allegedly stealing more than one million dollars from the estate of a 93-year-old woman.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Construction is continuing on two sinkholes in Wilkes-Barre, both are on Horton Street in two different locations.

While crews work to repair them, one business owner is managing his frustrations in a fun way.

"Yes traffic isn't as plentiful as it used to be, but it's nice that the road kind of ends at wet paint now," said Scott Paull.

No swimming at Ricketts Glen due to bacteria levels

FAIRMOUNT TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The swimming area at Ricketts Glen State Park has been closed due to high bacteria levels in the water.

According to the park's Facebook page, water samples taken during a routine test on Thursday showed dangerously high levels of bacteria in the water. They announced that the swimming area would be closed until they received results showing acceptable levels.

Six men accused of assaulting two teens at restaurant

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are searching for six men who allegedly wore masks and assaulted two teens inside a business. On July 16, around 9:00 p.m., officers were called to a restaurant located on Barney Street in Wilkes-Barre for a report of an assault.

Once on the scene, police said the manager of the restaurant claimed six men dressed in black and wearing face masks entered the business and went behind the counter.

Crews quickly extinguish fire in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A fire at a house on George Avenue was quickly put out by first responders Thursday morning.

According to a resident, the fire alarm went off around 7:30 a.m. He believed that an electrical fire had begun in the attic before spreading to the rest of the house.

All the residents were able to escape safely while they waited for crews to arrive.

On July 15, around 3:40 p.m., officers say they were called to Carey Avenue and Horton Street for a report of a 26-year-old construction worker from Scranton who had been assaulted.
