Community helps Wilkes-Barre business after fire

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — After an Edwardsville business was destroyed by a fire, the community rallied to help the owner of NEPA Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) business relocate.

After a fire destroyed a local mixed martial arts studio on February 15, owner Kyle Reed was devastated.

"Probably one of the most horrific experiences I've ever had to experience my life from getting the phone call to pulling up on the scene and just seeing everything that I built I dreamed and everything like that just gone with hours," said NEPA MMA owner Kyle Reed.

Decomposed remains discovered in Wilkes-Barre home

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Investigators announced that decomposed remains were discovered in the basement of a Wilkes-Barre home.

Police Chief Joseph Coffay, Luzerne County Coroner Jillian Matthews, and District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce released information Thursday afternoon regarding the Carlisle Street investigation which has been ongoing in the Diamond City this week.

Arrests made, two found with meth near San Souci Parkway

HANOVER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two people have been arrested and charged after police say they were found with methamphetamine.

According to the Hanover Township Police Department, on February 20 around 1:10 a.m., 45-year-old, Frank Geklinsky, of Nanticoke and 38-year-old Jocelynne A Krout, of Wilkes-Barre Township were located in the area of the San Souci.

Juvenile reported missing in Luzerne County

Police say both were found in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. 

Both are facing drug-related charges.

EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police in Luzerne County are searching for a young girl reported missing.

The Edwardsville Police Department is looking for a missing girl. Officers with the department did not release the name or the age of the missing juvenile.

Man accused of trying to set roommate on fire

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the girl is asked to contact 911 or 570-288-6484.

Celebrating Black History in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local college celebrated Black History Month all February long, finishing up with a special event earlier Wednesday evening.

The university held a lecture that explained the local ties a famous civil rights leader has to our area.

Wilkes University honored Black History Month with multiple different events throughout the month.

Their final event discussed the journey of Frederick Douglass and the influence he had on northeastern Pennsylvania.

Investigation continues into vacant Wilkes-Barre house

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — To the latest on the ongoing apparent death investigation at a vacant South Wilkes-Barre home.

As of now, investigators are still not saying why they have been investigating.

Police have been investigating the Wilkes-Barre house for more than 24 hours.

28/22 News has yet to hear from police on exactly what they're looking for, but Wednesday, we saw police in and out of the home, including experts in forensics.

Man convicted of 2018 murder in Wilkes-Barre Twp.

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One man was convicted on Wednesday for a murder that happened in 2018.

According to police, Anthony Shaw, 47, of East Orange, New Jersey, was charged in the 2018 stabbing murder of 39-year-old, Cindy Ashton.

Officials say the murder happened inside Ashton's home on Nicholson Street in Wilkes-Barre Township.

Apparent death investigation in Wilkes-Barre home continues

Police say surveillance video showed Shaw moving Ashton's car the night she was killed in May 2018.
