Dodging cabin fever at Annual Harding Winterfest

EXETER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local community is dodging cabin fever with some food, crafts, and music.

Folks came out on Sunday for the Annual Harding Winterfest.

They filed into the Exeter Township Municipal Building for a day of fun that included a hotdog stand, racks of handmade goods, and raffles.

This marks the third year the Harding Recreation Committee held Winterfest.

Hundreds of nurses preparing to hit picket lines in Luzerne County

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of local nurses were just hours away from going on strike. They will hit the picket lines in their fight for a new contract.

They came together Sunday afternoon to prepare for the strike.

Nurses at several Geisinger facilities are one step closer to walking off the job.

Some of them met this afternoon to prepare for their strike.

More than a dozen Geisinger Wyoming Valley nurses gathered inside a room at the Holiday Inn in Plains Township late Sunday afternoon.

Wintery mix makes its way through NEPA

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A concern on many minds with the winter storm is travel conditions. Conditions since Saturday afternoon have been slightly snowy and a little slushy.

As of about 11:00 p.m. Saturday, the roads were mainly wet and there was a break in the action.

Parking ban in place in Luzerne County amid winter weather

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Some local communities have a parking ban in effect because of the storm from Saturday into Sunday.

Three of them are in the Wyoming Valley.

The parking ban is in effect along Wyoming Avenue through West Pittston, Exeter, and Wyoming Boroughs.

Traffic restrictions being put in place across NEPA

The ban started Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and will continue until Sunday at 10:00 a.m. so that the Department of Public Works crews can treat roads.

Police say cars caught violating the ban will be ticketed and or towed.

Police: Man robbed Adams Co. convenience store, carjacked driver in Luzerne Co., striking them with own car

ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) -- A Maryland man is facing felony charges in two counties, accused of robbing a convenience store near Gettysburg and carjacking a driver in Luzerne County.

David Kelpy, 40, of Damascus, Maryland, is in Luzerne County Prison on felony assault, theft, and robbery charges there.

Kelpy is accused in two separate incidents overnight 117 miles apart.

State Police at Gettysburg charged Kelpy with felony robbery and theft charges, accusing him of robbing Royal Farms on York Road in Straban Township, Adams County.

First responders honored after apartment fire one year ago

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— In the early evening hours of February 15, 2024, a fire led to the evacuation of the B'nai B'rith Apartment Complex.

The complex is home to more than 100 senior citizens.

Officials in Wilkes-Barre are honoring some of the firefighters, EMTs and paramedics, who responded to the call.

"I thought we were gonna die, I really did," voiced Mary Herman, resident.

Mary Herman was in her third floor apartment in B'nai B'rith when the fire broke out last February.

28/22 News stopped by McCarthy Flowers in Wilkes-Barre where they were packed with people picking up flowers for that special someone in their life.

Maternity Home opening for new mothers in Scranton

Employees there say the most popular flower that's ordered is the classic rose, mainly red but can be a variety of colors.

The spring mix bouquet is a top seller too.
