'Big Downtown Ice Festival' returns to Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The "Big Downtown Ice Festival" is set to kick off in Scranton this weekend.

The festival is scheduled for Friday, February 9, and Saturday, February 10. This year's theme is "Under the Big Top/Circus Acts."

Over 50 ice sculptures will be shown at the festival that families and visitors can view throughout the Electric City.

The kick-off event starts on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with live ice carving and various circus acts.

Lackawanna County man going to 27th Super Bowl in a row

BLAKELY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— While most of us will be watching this weekend's big game on TV, one man from our region will be in Vegas for his 27th Super Bowl in a row.

28/22 News Reporter Sydney Kostus spoke to the Lackawanna County native about how the love of the game has brought him to more than two dozen Super Bowls.

"1969: Valley View's first-ever game against Pittston area. Played right on this field and I actually sat as a young boy in bleachers that were right in that endzone," Larry Spegar said.

Three men accused of committing retail theft at Walmart

RUSH TWP., SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police are searching for three men accused of retail theft at Walmart.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on December 23 around 4:00 p.m., troopers were called to Walmart in Rush Township, Schuylkill County for a reported theft.

Police say the three men pictured took $346 worth of merchandise from the store without paying.

Two people injured in Monroe County fire

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Firefighters are on the scene of a house fire with two people reportedly injured in Monroe County.

First responders were called to the 500 block of Cays Road for a reported house fire with possible entrapment at 9:43 a.m. Tuesday morning. 

14-year-old accused of stabbing teen during argument

Details are limited at this time, but the Monroe County Communication Center tells us an air medical unit was called to the scene for two people who were injured.

The extent of those injuries is unknown at this time.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro presents annual budget address

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro delivered his second budget address in Harrisburg this afternoon, announcing an "ambitious" plan for $1.1 billion in new money for schools and calls to raise the minimum wage and legalizing marijuana.

Shapiro says the plan cuts taxes and leaves an $11 billion surplus if every program he proposed was approved.
