Parents feeling the pinch in back-to-school supplies

DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The excitement of a new school year may be in the air, but parents are feeling the pinch when it comes to shopping for supplies.

"I got a binder, two books, pencil case, pencils, and erasers," Wilkes-Barre resident Alicia Ramoa.

Those are some of the typical supplies kids need to go back to school, and as families prepare for the new school year, many are noticing a difference at the checkout

Crews fight South Abington Township fire

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Crews were called to South Abington Township for a reported house fire Sunday evening.

At around 6:30 p.m., crews from South Abington Township and the surrounding area were called to the unit block of Orchard Lane for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters battle second alarm fire in Cleveland Township

Officials say there are no reported injuries and a fire marshal was called to the scene.

Firefighters are still battling the blaze as of 9:10 p.m.

Paving project coming to Lycoming County

LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a paving project will begin in Lycoming County.

PennDOT says on Sunday, August 25, through Friday, August 30, a paving crew will be paving and milling Fourth Street between Hillside Avenue in Williamsport and Route 220 in Woodward Township.

2nd Annual Back Mountain Triathlon returns to NEPA

Drivers can expect single-lane conditions with flagging where work is being done and, weather permitting, will be performed between 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., according to PennDOT.

Sixth Annual Hazleton Area Children's Festival held in Hazle Township

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The focus was on family fun Sunday near Hazleton. Hundreds of families filled Hazle Township Community Park for the Sixth Annual Hazleton Area Children's Festival.

The non-profit, Hazleton Power, hosted the event.

It featured a wide variety of activities and attractions, including mini golf, a petting zoo, and even a meet-and-greet with first responders.

The festival proved to be a big hit with families from the Greater Hazleton Area, as well as a mom and her three children from Mountain Top.

2nd Annual Back Mountain Triathlon returns to NEPA

HARVEYS LAKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An athletic test of endurance returns to northeastern Pennsylvania.

More than 200 athletes participated Sunday morning in the Back Mountain Triathlon.

"When you're in the water, you're very disoriented. So the kayak kelps to guide the swimmers along the course. It's very important and it helps the swimmers stay safe and stay on track," said Wendy Narcum from Shavertown.

"It's very upbeat, so as you can hear the music is definitely loud and pumped, especially at 6:00 a.m.," Shavertown resident Abby Jacobs explained.

Firefighters battle second alarm fire in Cleveland Township

CLEVELAND TOWNSHIP, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Officials say crews are battling a second-alarm fire in Cleveland Township Sunday afternoon.

The Valley Chemical Fire Company and other crews were called to the unit block of Ridge Road shortly after 3:00 p.m. for a reported structure fire.

One dead after Penn Forrest Township ATV crash

So far, there are no reported injuries.
