Helping Hands Society fundraises for kids in Annual Office Olympics

BUTLER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One of the biggest fundraisers for a local nonprofit is now in the books. Saturday's event combined Olympic-style games with plenty of laughs and camaraderie.

A night of friendly competition, laughter, and teamwork. The Helping Hands Society's Annual Office Olympics Fundraiser brought people together for more than just games.

It's all about raising money to support children who need educational and therapeutic services.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Volunteers in Scranton are preparing to bring Saint Patrick's Day cheer to thousands of seniors. Dozens of volunteers with the Shamrock Heart Foundation gathered on Saturday in South Scranton.

They prepared more than 3,600 corsages and boutonnieres.

The flowers will reach thousands of residents in dozens of nursing homes and hospitals across Lackawanna County.

The tradition, now in its 32nd year, is a way to show seniors they are being thought of fondly.

The unmistakable sound of a pipe band, a marching band, and a pile of people in downtown Pottsville mean only one thing: the Pottsville Saint Patrick's Parade.

"The Saint Paddy's Day Parade is lit, you know. I had to wear green to pop out," a parade-goer said.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A former leader of Ireland is in northeastern Pennsylvania on Saturday for a prestigious annual Irish celebration.

Former irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny served as guest speaker at Saturday's 119th Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick of Lackawanna County Dinner.

Preschool program thriving after reintroduction

The 73-year-old Kenny served as Ireland's Taoiseach, a title in Ireland formerly called Prime Minister, from 2011 to 2017.

Saturday night's dinner was held at the Scranton Cultural Center for a second year in a row.
