Exterior renovations of Scranton City Hall finished

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Electric City skyline is back in tip-top shape. Exterior renovations are complete at Scranton City Hall.

Officials cut off the remaining caution tape this morning to unveil the $4,800,000 project.

Scaffolding covered the municipal building for the last 14 months as construction and restoration experts worked on the facade and roof.

The three-story historic building was constructed in 1888, and the last major renovation project took place in 1980.

Oral arguments given over Lackawanna County commissioner vacancy

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — In February, Lackawanna County Commissioner Bill Gaughan filed a petition arguing the county should follow a Supreme Court ruling that allows anyone interested in Matt McGloin's vacant commissioner's position to apply.

The Lackawanna County Democratic Committee argues that the home rule charter should apply, which would give the power of choosing three candidates out of a pool of applicants to the committee, before being handed off to county judges for final selection.

Special memorial mass held for Pope Francis in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The faithful community is joining others around the world in prayer as they mourn the loss of Pope Francis.

A special memorial mass dedicated to the late pontiff was held Tuesday afternoon in Scranton.

During this time of mourning, parishioners and local students came together in prayer for Pope Francis.

St. Peter's Cathedral was packed on Tuesday afternoon. Bishop Joseph Bambera presided over the noon mass.

Parishioners throughout the Diocese of Scranton were all in attendance.

Two children flown to hospital after UTV crash

RYAN TWP., SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police say two children were flown to the hospital after a UTV crash.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, a 10-year-old girl was operating a UTV with her 5-year-old brother in Ryan Township, Schuylkill County, on April 19.

Two women accused of restraining malnourished child to bed

Police say that while traveling in the farm field, the girl lost control of the UTV, causing it to impact a large tree.
