Lackawanna County to mail out property assessments

LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lackawanna County is mailing out new property assessments for the first time in more than 50 years.

About 50,000 property owners will receive reassessments this Friday, and another 50,000 next week.

Officials stress these are not tax bills, they will help set 2026 tax rates.

I-80 safety cameras catching speedsters at record numbers

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lead foot drivers beware! Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) work zone safety cameras have been catching speeders in record numbers at a local exit on Interstate 80.

Construction on Interstate 80 near East Stroudsburg is nothing new, and neither are PennDOT's work zone safety cameras, but officials from East Stroudsburg Borough say the number of speeders caught by these cameras is excessive, and it doesn't seem to be slowing drivers down.

House destroyed in Monroe County fire

CHESTNUT HILL TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A home is a total loss after a fire broke out in Monroe County.

Crews were called to Red Pine Road, Chestnut Hill Township, just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

West End Fire Company Chief Mike Manfre told 28/22 News two people lived in the home with multiple pets, but no one was injured.

Preparing for possible measles cases in NEPA

The chief also said that dry conditions caused a brush fire that endangered nearby buildings along with the house fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Local Ukrainian remains positive for possible ceasefire

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The war between Russia and Ukraine could be closer to seeing the end. Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire in return for the United States' financial support again.

It is now up to Russia to accept a truce in putting an end to the war.

Troopers investigating baby's death in Luzerne County

ASHLEY, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A death investigation is now underway after police say a three-month-old baby has died in Luzerne County.

Officers say they were called to a home near Wyoming and Maxwell streets in Ashley Wednesday evening.

Arrests made, one wanted after deadly party in the Poconos

It is not yet known how the baby died or if the death is suspicious, but Pennsylvania State Police Wilkes-Barre is handling the investigation.

2 former Mount Carmel officers plead guilty

MOUNT CARMEL, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two former Mount Carmel officers have pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to deprive rights under color of law.

This comes after a federal indictment says David Donkochik and Jonathan McHugh used their authority while in uniform to assault numerous people without justifiable cause.

Arrests made, one wanted after deadly party in the Poconos

They are accused of violating the civil rights of 22 people over a three-year period.

They face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
